DMX, electrifying rapper who defined 2000s rap, dies at 50

Earl Simmons, better known as DMX

DMX, the prolific rapper and actor who rose to fame in the late 1990s and 2000s, has died nearly a week after suffering a heart attack, his family said in a statement Friday. He was 50 years old.

The rapper, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was hospitalized in White Plains, New York, after suffering the heart attack on April 2. He spent roughly a week on life support and was facing what his family called “serious health issues.”

“Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him,” his family said. “Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever. We appreciate all of the love and support during this incredibly difficult time.”

Known for his electrifying hits, aggressive rhymes and growling voice, DMX defined the 2000s era of hip-hop, becoming the first artist to debut an album at No. 1 five times in a row on the Billboard charts. He also became a welcome face on screen, becoming an actor with roles in the cult classic “Belly” in 1998, “Romeo Must Die” in 2000 and “Exit Wounds” in 2001.

Fellow musicians and celebrities responded to news of DMX’s hospitalization with public displays of support and condolences to his family, including Missy Elliot, Ja Rule, Rick Ross, Sisqo, LL Cool J and Chance The Rapper. And his fans hoped to lift him up outside the hospital where he was admitted. Dozens attended a prayer vigil, playing the rapper’s greatest hits, chanting his name and sharing their love for his work.

The rapper was born on December 18, 1970, in Mount Vernon, New York, and eventually moved to the city of Yonkers. He often spoke of growing up in an abusive household and turning to music as an outlet. In his 2003 autobiography, he wrote about his family’s struggles, calling his childhood “rough.” He said he was hit by a car at a young age and abused by his family, which led him to act out at home and at school.

After gaining a reputation for being “crazy,” DMX taught himself how to beatbox and created a new name and identity for himself while struggling with addiction. But before he could perform as a DJ, he needed a name. Help came in the form of one of the greatest drum audio machines at the time.

“DMX was the name of one of the best early drum machines a lot of the kids were using and since I felt I was nice with the beats, I took that. It was strong, powerful,” he wrote. “I liked the three letters and thought that it would be cool to make them stand for different things. So when I went back to Children’s Village after my home visit, I was no longer Earl Simmons or even Crazy Earl. I was DMX. DMX The Beat Box Enforcer.”

X’s music was often an honest reflection of his personal struggles, containing themes of religion, violence and redemption. In 1998, he released his debut album, “It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot,” which debuted at No. 1 on the music charts. He’s often credited with reinvigorating the New York rap scene, and over the course of his career, he released a total of seven albums and was nominated for three Grammy Awards.

In a 2019 interview, he spoke about his love of performing on stage in front of his fans. “Performing in front of people is beyond a high. It’s beyond a high that any drug could duplicate,” he told GQ at the time. “Just being onstage, period, and knowing that there’s so much love out there.”

FG Counters Edo State Govt, Says National Sports Festival To Continue

The Federal Government has dismissed that the ongoing National Sports Festival taking place in Edo State will continue.

Recall that the Local Organising Committee of the sports festival had announced on Wednesday night that the game will ‘abruptly’ end today (Thursday) owing to paucity of funds.

But the Federal Government on Thursday morning dismissed the position of the LOC, saying the festival had just been flagged off, and will continue as planned.

The statement read, “The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has clarified that the 20th National Sports Festival, Edo 2020, is going on as planned with competitions going on as scheduled.

“The Ministry and the Main Organizing Committee for the festival are unaware of any plans or threat by the Edo State Government to shut down the sports festival as there has been no official meeting or communication that relayed such information.

“The Honorable Minister, Permanent Secretary and Directors are on ground in Benin City where the Festival is holding, and it is expected that the Edo State Government would formally invite the Ministry for a meeting should any urgency exist around the National Sports Festival or communicate officially with the Main Organizing Committee for the festival. The Ministry has no such communication.

“For the records, the Edo State government due to the cost implications of postponements occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic requested financial assistance from the Federal government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.

Just In:Gunshots As Another Police Station Is Set Ablaze In Imo

The Ehime Mbano Local Government Area Divisional Police Headquarters in Imo State has been set on fire.

It was gathered that some gunmen broke into the station on Tuesday evening, shooting sporadically before torching the facility.

A resident said the armed men operated unchallenged for more than 45 minutes.

The development comes after Ex-Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, inspected the damages caused by gunmen who invaded the headquarters of Nigerian Correctional Centre and the Imo State Police Command in Owerri, the state capital.

Gunmen the police accused of being members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) had freed over 1,800 inmates at the correctional centre and razed sections of the police headquarters.

After inspecting the damage caused by the attack, the ex-IGP ordered police officers to use maximum force against IPOB.

“Those that were released by the attackers, I have been told, some of them belong to the IPOB group; the proscribed IPOB group,” he had said.

“We are sending this message to them that there will be no hiding place. They will be re-arrested and many more of the criminals within that group will be arrested.

“Whether in their homes and forest, we are determined to fish them out. I have instructed my men to use maximum force with the guns available to us.

“We have the authority to defend the country, which they don’t have. We will not allow these criminals to succeed.”

That was the last order he gave as the number one police officer in the country as he was replaced hours after.

Usman Baba, a former Deputy Inspector-General of Police, has been appointed in acting capacity.

Owerri: MASSOB spits fire, accuses FG of sponsoring terrorist attacks in South East

Leadership of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has said that the Federal Government led by Muhammadu Buhari is using bandits to create tension and fear in Igboland.

MASSOB in a press release issued by Comrade Uchenna Madu (Leader of MASSOB) while condemning coordinated attacks on civilians and security operatives in Enugu, Ebonyi and Anambra States, describe the incidents as a plan to turn Igbo land into another war zone like the North East.

The release said in parts: “These acts of criminal terrorism by the so called unknown gunmen being perpetrated in our land against government facilities, security agents and some prominent individuals are being sponsored by enemies of Ndigbo.

‘MASSOB condemns the terrorist attack against Chukwuma Soludo at Isuofia, we equally condemn the unwarranted killings of Ebonyi and Enugu state citizens by Fulani terrorist herdsmen. MASSOB condemned in totality, the breaking of Owerri prison by the so called unknown gunmen.

“Through MASSOB Intelligence Agency, we found out that all these attacks are being sponsored and executed by federal government of Nigeria through their protected militiamen called bandits and unknown gunmen. Their primary aim is to discredit non violence pro Biafra freedom fighters like MASSOB and IPOB. They want to create an erroneous impression that pro Biafra agitators have turned violent and militancy.

How can untrained amatures a with no military training overpower the entire security apparatus of Nigeria in South East? Why is it that there was no security resistance during the breaking up of owerri prisons and Imo State police headquarters in an operation that lasted more than one hour.

Nigeria military cantonment, Obinze Owerri is seven minutes drive to the scenes of the crime, Imo State MOPOL base is three minutes drive to the scenes of the crime but no resistance from security agencies.

The terrorist attacks in Owerri are part of the ongoing destructive measures by the President Muhamadu Buhari led administration to discredit and blackmail the pro Biafra organizations to create an erroneous impression that Biafrans are waging war against Nigeria. Igbo land is the most peaceful and unterrorised region.

MASSOB advised Governor Hope Uzodinma to stop heaping blames on IPOB or ESN or any other pro Biafra organization. Pro Biafra agitators are not responsible for all the terrorist activities in Igbo land. President Muhamadu Buhari and his Fulani cabals are responsible. The fulani commissioners of police and military chiefs in Igbo land are partners in these terrorist activities in Biafra land.

They will never stop until they achieve their desired aim. More destructive attacks will still come unless Southeast governors and other political, traditional and opinion leaders of Igbo land quickly convene a security meeting where critical stakeholders will put a a lasting strategy that will stop these devastative implosion coming to Biafra land.

The federal government of Nigeria led by President Muhamadu Buhari is plotting to militralised the entire Biafra land in disguise of searching for pro Biafra agitators. They are planning to intimidate and inflict fear on our people to frustrate Ndigbo from clamouring for2023 presidency’, it concluded.

Breaking: USSD: Banks disconnect MTN from banking channels

Commercial banks have disconnected MTN customers from banking channels including the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data and banking apps.

MTN customers complained on Friday about being unable to recharge their MTN lines using USSD and other banking channels like the bank apps.

Customers were also unable to do banking transactions on MTN lines through USSD.

According to a source in MTN, this was not the doing of the telco but the banks who had refused to give any formal communication prior to the disconnection.

He said, “Please note that MTN didn’t cut off customers and has no hand in this. This is strictly the banks acting on their own.

“We woke up this morning to see that MTN customers were cut off from USSD services overnight. This has come as a surprise as there was no formal communication from the banks to their customers prior to their taking this action.

The source disclosed that MTN had reduced the banks’ commission from an average of 3.5 per cent to 2.5 per cent which predicated the actions of the banks.

According to the source, the reduction is standard because the volumes compensate for the reduction, adding that the contract with convenience channel partners and aggregators through which they were indirectly connected to the banks allowed this.

The source said, “The banks wrote back to the aggregators to revert back to the old commission, otherwise, they would block MTN airtime in all their channels.

“The channels were blocked midnight leaving our customers stranded.

Interesting that the bank Managing Directors met and quickly took a decision. Subscribers to telecommunications are being denied services by the banks even when they have money in their accounts.”

He noted that Zenith bank, which was connected directly to MTN and had their earnings at 2.70 per cent, was the only bank that had not blocked the telco.

However, banks on MOD that had an uplift in their commission from 2.0 per cent to 2.75 per cent have blocked services, according to him. Banks with direct connection to the telco through MOD got a commission uplift.

According to the source, the banks were unwilling to pay the cost of the USSD channel and were okay with cutting off subscribers in order to protect their profits.

He added, “This only has to do with preservation of bank profits, which are already substantial and growing despite the wider economic conditions

“The government needs to step in and deal with this once and for all. Nigerian banks need to stop their tyrannical posture.”
