Alleged shun of Southern officers, deployment of Northern commander to S’East not true – Army

Some men of the Nigerian special forces

The Nigerian Army has dismissed cloaks that it ignored Southerners and deployed only Northern commanders to the South East of Nigeria to quell insecurity.

The Army, in a Press Statement sighed by its Director of Public Relations, Brigadier General Mohammed Yerima, it descieber the report from Sahara Reporters as one full of errors and ignorance on the side of the reporter, arguing that at least, two southerners were in charge in the South West and South East commands.

The Statement reads “The attention of the Nigerian Army (NA) has been drawn to an online publication anchored by SAHARA REPORTERS and cohorts titled “NIGERIAN ARMY SHUNS SOUTHERN OFFICERS, DEPLOY NORTHERN COMMANDERS TO QUELL TENSION IN SOUTH EAST”.

“Ordinarily, the NA would have ignored this illogical narrative by the online media but for the good of members of the public. The NA condemn this report targeted at steering discord and disunity among peace loving Nigerians who have refused to be drawn into supporting the senseless attacks on security apparatus in the South East and South South geopolitical zones of the country. The NA being a national body does not promote or post its personnel along ethnic or religious lines. Postings in the NA are routine exercises and are based on professional competences not as portrayed by the baseless publication. For the records, let be clear in everyone’s mind that the NA does not train, deploy or operate along ethnic, religious, tribal or regional divides. Senior officers are posted to command units based on their capability and competence taking into consideration their posting history.

“Furthermore, Officers are the most frequently posted personnel of the NA. However, because of the bias and seed of discord that the author of the report wanted to sow, it did not allow him to do a thorough background check of his report. Part of the poorly scripted article states that NA’s deployment is based on ethical line. This is one of the dumbest opinions of the writer. To put the record straight, while it is true that the General Officer Commanding 82 Division Enugu, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja is from South West, the Commander 34 Brigade Owerri Brigadier General Raymond Utsaha is from the North Central. Major General Gold Chibuisi is of the South East extraction and is also the General Officer Commanding 2 Division Ibadan which is the largest in number of states under command including 4 Brigade in Edo State. Equally, Brigadier General Farouk Mijinyawa was never the Commander of 16 Brigade as misrepresented by the writer. It is therefore clear that the concocted story lacks everything in terms of credibility and exists only in the pigment of the author’s imagination.

“The NA urge the general public to know that in the past months, several subversive elements have attempted to discredit the formidable security network in the South East and the NA in line with her constitutional roles of aiding the civil authority deployed officers and men to checkmate the activities of these bad elements who are bent on wrecking havoc in the region. The amateurish article presented in a self-styled fictitious movie like scenario devoid of even the basic rudiments of a news report is simply unacceptable.

“The uncoordinated and poorly written article exposes the real intent albeit the very low IQ of the author and that speaks volumes on the motive of the publisher.

“Furthermore, the NA would like to request all peace loving Nigerians to disregard the content of the said article in its entirety as it lacks common logic. The NA under the able leadership of the Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru remains committed to the defence of the territorial integrity of Nigeria as well as protecting lives and properties of all citizens and residents in Nigeria. The NA further solicits for the continuous support of all patriotic Nigerians in stamping out activities of criminals including subversive and divisive elements for a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria”.

INSECURITY: Nigeria Reaping The Dividends of Bad Governance, Says ESCSEG Coordinator Onyendozi

Comrade Onyendozi Onwe

As Nigeria continue to grasp with the rising insecurity across the nation especially in the South East, Coordinator of Enugu State Citizens Support for Equity and Good Governance (ESCSEG), Comr. Onyendozi E. Onwe has said that bad governance was responsible for the trend.

Speaking to reporters on the state of the nation shortly after their state executive committee meeting in Enugu, Onyendozi described the insecurity as ‘dividends of decades of negligence and bad governance by successive government at all levels’.

According to him “the emergence of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), could best be described as leadership failure and indictment on the part of the south eastern governors”.

He stated that if urgent measures are not put in place to avert the looming anarchy, the south east will soon become the most hostile zone in the country.

On the creation of Ebubeagu regional security by the South East governors, he said that formation was a face saving measures by the governors: “Until the operational means of funding and enabling laws are put in place, it remains a communiqué”.

Onyendozi, who was the 2019 Nkanu West SDP House of Assembly candidate charged South East governors to embark on people oriented projects that will restore the leadership confidence of their people on them which seems to have been lost as a result of the activities of Pro-Biafran groups.

On the efforts of the group in the area of good governance, the ESCSEG Coordinator disclosed that the leadership of the group is currently discussing with some civil society groups in the region to convocate its first good governance summit.

332 Fulani Settlements With AK-47 Rifles Already In S’ East, Says Ex-DIG

As the country’s insecurity challenges deepen, a former Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ozo Celestine Okoye, yesterday raised fresh alarm over the presence of heavily armed Fulani herdsmen with AK- 47 rifles, occupying a total of 332 Fulani settlements across the five states in the South Eastern zone with the intention of attacking the region in the foreseeable future.

According to Okoye, in an exclusively interview with Saturday Telegraph, the Fulani herdsmen in the South East are more located in Ebony, Anambra, Enugu and Abia states while trying to make inroad into Imo State.

“I wonder what our governors are doing about the heavy presence of heavily armed Fulani herdsmen in Igboland and I am worried because I am an Igbo man from Awka, Anambra State. “Why are they pretending about it even when they know? In Imo State they have taken over Okigwe town and some parts of Abia State close to Imo State and they are heavily armed.

“Ebonyi State has the largest number of Fulani settlements in the South East and their presence is dangerous to the people of the area. “If you go to Amansea border towns of Anambra State and Isiagu town in Anambra State they are building permanent settlements that, is houses, claiming that they bought the land from the owners and one wonders what would happen when they launch the planned attack.’’ Okoye further said that the Fulani settlements are at the border towns of the five South East states, an indication that Igbo land is under siege by the strangers.

“As a security operative when such elements are setting at the border towns, it means that the owners of the land are not safe and that means that when they launch their attacks you have nowhere to run to because you are under siege and there is nothing you can do about it,’’ he stated. He further said that the governors of the South East should be proactive in the area of security, adding that with such a development, Ndigbo is as good as conquered by the Fulani herdsmen.

“No matter how we see it we have an impending crisis in our hands capable of making the South East ungovernable and it is high time our governors woke up to the looming security crisis in the South East and nip it in the bud,’’ warned the former DIG. Okoye contended that the claims by security operatives that they are on top of the situation is merely lips service aimed at calming down the panic even as he insisted that if nothing is done, Ndigbo would be found wanting.

‘‘Our vigilante groups and traditional rulers should be vigilant and ready for any eventuality and our governors should assist them before we would be caught napping with nowhere to run to and nothing to do to save our people,’’ he said.

When contacted, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed to our reporter that the command is on top of any attempt to disturb the peace in the area, adding that rumours mongers are out to create unnecessary tension in the state.

BREAKING: APC Appoints Hope Uzodinma South East Leader

Ahead of its planned national convention, the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) has appointed Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma as the leader of the South East caucus for the exercise.

This was revealed in a letter the Chairman of the APC National Caretaker/Extraordinary Conversation Planning Committee and Yobe state governor, Alhaji Mal Mala Buni addressed to the governor.

The letter said part of his responsibilities is to mobilise other leaders in the zone to ensure a hitch free membership registration exercise, congresses and national convention.

“Uzodinma will also over see the reconciliation of disputing and aggrieved members in the zone.

“I write to mandate Your Excellency to lead the south east caucus, stakeholders and other opinion leaders towards achieving the objectives”, the letter read.

Prior to the appointment of Uzodinma to this role, the governor had spearheaded the reconciliation of APC members both in the state and the entire Southeast.

Apart from providing a platform for leaders of the zone to exchange ideas on how to expand the influence of the party in Igboland, Uzodinma has hosted them from time to time.

Before the defection of Ebonyi state governor, Dave Umahi from PDP to APC, Uzodinma was the only governor of the party in the South East.

In one of his visits to the Government House, Owerri, former Senate President, Chief Ken Nnamani predicted that with Uzodinma’s leadership of APC in the Southeast, more responsible Ndigbo will flock to the party in no distant time.

2023: Don’t undermine South-East by denying zone presidential ticket, Kalu cautions PDP

It will be foolhardy to discountenance the influence of the entire South-Easterners ahead of the 2023 presidential election says PDP chieftain, Dr Emeka Kalu.

Kalu, who is the National Coordinator of PDP Coalition stated this following the backdrop of some PDP leaders agitating for the presidency to zoned to the North in 2023.

Reacting to what has become a hot political debate, Kalu in a statement warned that PDP may misfire if they underrate the Igbos who stood by the party since 1999 and gave her close to 7million votes across the nation in 2019 Presidential election.

He said “The leadership of PDP should not underrate or neglect the South-East in the decision making of the party with regards to zoning of party’s presidential ticket.”

“The South- East has sacrificed tremendously for the wellbeing, survival, growth and development of the party. They shouldn’t be underrated in 2023. The aspect of zoning the presidential ticket should be thoroughly debated by all and unanimously agreed on to please all and sundry.”

“The South-East contributed to the formation of the PDP through Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Ezeogo Anaga Ezikpe and Orji Uzor Kalu. Prince Vincent Ogbulafor was National Secretary and Chairman when the party controlled 24 and 30 states respectively. Late Ojo Maduekwe was National Secretary when the party won in 28 states and so, it’ll be irresponsible to underrate the same people who led the party effectively.”

How Enugu State Government has been frustrating railway extension to South East-NRC

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) on Thursday accused the Enugu State Government of frustrating the Federal Government’s efforts to extension its standard gauge railway project to the South East by demolishing some of its facilities.

The Chairman, Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, Dr. Josef Onoh, had claimed in a publication that certain property linked to the railway, especially in Emene, Enugu, were obstructing the rehabilitation of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport.

The agency proceeded to destroy some structures in the area, including the railway land at Ukwuorji, last week.

But the Railway District Manager (East), Enugu, Osidipe Olusoji, dismissed the claims, insisting that its facilities were not hindering work on airport.

He decried the action of the state government, lamenting that the structures were destroyed at a time the Federal Government had redoubled efforts to extend the standard gauge railway to the zone.

The NRC chief said: “Now that the attention of the Federal Government is focused on this, the ECTDA is still unable to see what is coming and is, therefore, trying to frustrate the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the railway land at Ukwuorji in Emene is not in any way obstructing the rehabilitation of the airport. It may also interest the general public to know that the Ukwuorji area is in no way close to the airport in such a way that it will obstruct the airport rehabilitation. The land is not in the direction of incoming or outgoing flights from Enugu airport.”

However, the state government said it only destroyed shanties in the area obstructing the railway project and airport rehabilitation, stressing that it was not interested in the land belonging to the NRC.

The state Commissioner for Information, Chidi Aroh, said: “We want a new standard gauge to be built just as we begged for the upgrade of the airport.”

Igbere TV Threatens to Sue Dangote Over Influx of Almajiris to S’East

Executive Director of popular online platform Igbere TV, Emeh James Anyalekwa, has threatened to sue Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote over the influx of almajiris to the Southeast region, amid the coronavirus-imposed lockdown.

There are several viral videos on the internet, capturing moments Dangote trucks were intercepted or caught smuggling almajiris (otherwise known as Northern beggars) into Southern states, even with the ban on such travels.

But Dangote had, in a letter addressed to Igbo socio-political organization, Ohaneze Ndigbo, denied that his company’s trucks were being used to transport almajiris from the Northern part of Nigeria to the South.

In a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday, however, the Igbere TV boss said he was worried over the trend, demanding explanation from Dangote over the influx of almajiris from the North into the East via his trucks, despite the ban on interstate movement.

Anyalekwa, who doubles as National President, Online Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (OMPAN), wondered how the almajiris, with all the subsisting lockdown rules, were “still transiting into Southeast on Dangote trucks, without being detected.”

According to him, “The open-denial by Alhaji Aliko Dangote that his trucks are not involved in this ugly trend, is not only unfortunate but not surprising. We are left without any doubt that the new invasion has truly commenced.

“I can’t comprehend what’s behind this Northern desperation in exporting almajiris to southeastern Nigeria by all means. Is there something we need to know about this move before we are caught unaware?

“It is frightening. These humans (almajiris) are packed like sardines in these trucks heading to the East. The unsightly spectacle are not hidden, they are reported all over the pages of newspapers. Is it that Dangote doesn’t read or what?”

Vowing to sue Dangote if the influx is not stopped, the Igbere TV director added, “On Thursday May 7, the Abia state government intercepted 26 people hidden in two Dangote trucks coming into the state. This was widely reported in the media; how come Dangote is claiming ignorance? Just on the 11th of same May, two truckloads of 120 almajiris were intercepted at Gakem border in Cross River State.

“In Enugu, the state government intercepted two vehicles relocating almajiris from North; this happened on the 8. Business Day also reported the intercepting of truckload of almajiris to Abia on May 5. Again on May 13 in Enugu, 15 almajiris were caught on the floor of a trailer, as reported by The Guardian; just to mention but a few.”

Blaming Dangote for the unabated influx, Mr. Anyalekwa recalled how Northern governors threatened to totally ban the Almajiri system in the region, and relocate every almajiri back to their states of origin; wondering if the East is also one of these origins.

“The Northern governors resolved to ‘totally ban’ the almajiri system in the region because of what they termed the “risk that almajiri children are exposed to because of coronavirus” and decided to “…evacuate the children to their parents or states of origin.”

“One may therefore be forced to ask if the Southeast movements are the abodes of the almajiri youths’ “parents” or their “states of origin.” We demand explanation from Dangote,” the Igbere TV boss insisted.

On the increasing rate of coronavirus figures and with more confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the North, the Igbere TV boss said “more worrisome is the health challenges the influx of almajiris pose to people living in the Southern region.”

“Just recently, Kano state returned 419 almajiris to Katsina; 524 to Jigawa and 155 to Kaduna, totalling 1,098. Weeks later, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State admitted returning some 30,000 to their “own states, he said.

“No sooner had these almajiris returned from Kano to Kaduna arrived than El-Rufai disclosed that 65 out of the 169 almajiris tested positive for coronavirus. Other states announced similar findings too.

“Today, aside from Lagos, the epicentre of COVID-19, the next five biggest cases are from the North (FCT included): Kano, FCT, Katsina, Bauchi and Borno. Obviously, the almajiris have become indeed vectors of coronavirus as feared,” the OMPAN national president lamented.

COVID-19: Our cattle business dead because Igbos no longer hold big ceremonies, Miyetti Allah laments

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, (MACBAN) has attributed the low sales of their cows in the South-East to the Coronavirus pandemic.

It lamented that the lockdown which was put in place to contain the spread of the pandemic has crippled glamorous ceremonies like burial and marriage ceremonies that the South-East spend huge amount of money to buy cows for.

Addressing journalists in Awka on Wednesday, the South-East MACBAN Chairman, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, said: “The Coronavirus Disease outbreak is seriously affecting our business, we no longer sell cows like we used to because people no longer celebrate marriages and burials like before. These are some of the events that give us sales.

“Again, cows have become expensive due to high cost of transportation; our volume of sales has gone down very much.”

The MACBAN Chairman regretted that many of his members were not adhering to rules to avoid contracting the disease even after they had been tutored on its dangers.

Sidikki added: “I and members of my leadership take the awareness message to them where they are in the bush and also tell them that we have to join hands with other people to eradicate this virus which is threatening our business.”

While calling on its members to obey the guidelines provided by health authorities and government, he urged Muslims to relate harmoniously with everyone irrespective of the creed in the spirit of lesson learnt in the cause of Ramadan.

He added: “I want to use this opportunity to thank the people of South-East, especially their governors, for the cordial relationship that exist between my members and their host communities.”

Sidikki further thanked South-East governors and the people of the zone for giving them the enabling environment to do their business.

North planning to infiltrate South East with Covid-19 infected Almajiri, IPOB alleges

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, yesterday raised the alarm that there is a grand plan by some elements in Northern Nigeria to infest the s-east with coronavirus, through sending the Almajirai to Enugu State.

IPOB alleged that those behind the plot are currently pursuing its actualisation under the guise of repatriation of Almajirai to their home states.

In a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the pro Biafra group wondered why the people behind the alleged plot will be sending Almajirai to Biafra land which does not harbour, encourage or make keeping Almajirai as part of their culture.

IPOB’s statement read: “We, the global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, ably led by our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu wishes to draw the attention of Biafrans and the world at large about the ploy by some Northern elements to export coronavirus from its Kano epicenter and other parts of Northern Nigeria to other parts of Nigeria particularly Biafra land.

“Those behind this evil plot are currently pursuing its actualisation under the guise of repatriation of Almajirai to their home states.

“It is a known fact that Biafrans have no Almajirai as that is not our culture. Why then are those behind the sending of Almajirai boys to Enugu doing so if not to infest Biafrans with COVID-19. It is an indisputabke face that there are no Almajirai of Biafran origin.

“Arewa North have been secretly sending potential coronavirus victims in the name of sending out their Alamajirai group to Enugu State since the lockdown started.

“Dispatching Almajirai to our land under any guise will not be accepted. We shall stoutly resist this move. Now, they intend to infest the rest of us with the virus under the guise of repatriation of Almajirai. We won’t allow this evil plot as there are no Almajiriai of Biafra origin, neither do we encourage such practice.”
