ANAMBRA 2021: I Am the Joker –Okonkwo

Frontline aspirant of the peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the governorship election holding in Anambra state in November 2021, Dr. Obiora Okonkwo, has said that he is the joker on PDP’s card for the election.

He also said that he is the king on the chessboard of the party going into the election.

Speaking when he addressed the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), members, supports and associates as he submitted his Expression of Interest (EoI) and Nomination forms to the party, Tuesday, Okonkwo said that as the king on the chessboard, he will guarantee that Anambra state returns to PDP in November.

“I am the joker. I am the king on the chessboard. In the game of chess the king ought to be protected for victory to be assured”, he said.

Okonkwo, who was received at Wadata House amid fanfare from various dance groups, said he had recently concluded a tour of the 21 local government areas of the state, where he met with, and addressed the party’s stakeholders, statutory delegates, local government and ward executives.

He disclosed that from the responses he got during the tour, he was certain to deliver the state to PDP in the November election.

According to him, “Anambra people yearn to return to the PDP and they are waiting for me to lead them back. I assure you that with free, fair and transparent primary election, I will not only win the primary but go ahead to win the November election in a landslide.

“Besides, it is not only about winning the election; we shall govern the state in such a way that Nigerians will be proud of the PDP”, he added.

Noting that though several aspirants had purchased the party’s forms to contest in the election, Okonkwo however, said there is only one aspirant to beat.

“That aspirant is me. I am the best of the best”, he said.

Receiving Okonkwo’s forms at an elaborate ceremony which held at the Party’s Conference Hall, National Organizing Secretary of the PDP, Col. Austin Akobundu said Okonkwo’s capacity and suitability for the Anambra top job, was not in doubt.

Akobundu, who lauded Okonkwo for his continued support for the party, both is good and bad times, said however that the June 26 primary election of the PDP would be free, fair and openly transparent.

“I assure you that the primary election will be free, fair and transparent. The National Working Committee of PDP will not condone any act of wrongdoing that will impugn the integrity of our primary election because once the primary of free and fair and transparent, you build trust among all members even in those that lose”, he said.

Aba Bye-Election: How PDP Defeated Uzor Kalu, APC by Landslide

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State has swept the Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency bye-election which held yesterday in all the polling units of the constituency.

Declaring PDP’s Chimaobi Ebisike winner of the election, the Resident Electoral Commissioner announced that the PDP polled 10,322 votes against its closet rival APC which polled 3,674 votes. Others are APGA 1,554 votes, AA 199 votes, ARM 13 votes and APM 8.

With the victory, Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency will now be represented by PDP’s Chimaobi Ebisike at the National Assembly.

Recall that the bye-election was scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the unfortunate demise in February of Hon Ossy Prestige of APGA who until his death was the Lawmaker representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency.

Ebisike’s Victory Vindicates Our Hardwork and Endorses Our Message of Justice and Equity in Aba – Ikpeazu

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has described the resounding victory of the PDP in yesterday’s bye election for the Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency as a clear vindication of the hardwork his administration has put into the repositioning of Aba.

In his official response to the victory of Hon. Chimaobi Ebisike of the PDP in the bye election, the Governor stated that the bye election was a first hand opportunity for the people of Aba to pass judgment on the efforts of his administration in rebuilding the broken walls of the Enyimba City. The Governor is grateful to God Almighty for His grace which made this victory possible.

“For all intents and purposes, this election was more appropriately, a referendum by the people of Aba on our work in the city. Our government has invested lots of effort in providing critical infrastructure in Aba and it is heartwarming to see that indeed, the people truly appreciate our efforts. It is also a clear message that our people detest injustice. The people of Aba completely endorsed our message that it was only just, fair and proper to allow the aborigines of Aba an opportunity to represent their own people for the first time in 22 years of our democracy at the National Assembly”.

The Governor congratulates the National Assembly Member-Elect, Hon. Chimaobi Ebisike and urged him to see his victory, first as God’s plan for his life and then as an opportunity to offer dedicated and selfless service to his own people.

“It is a massive privilege to be called upon to serve your own people. Ebisike must appreciate the historic nature of his election and what it means for the people of Aba. He must remain humble and work with dedication in the interest of the people of Aba. He must learn from his forebearers at the National Assembly, especially those who have made their people proud. He must prove that indeed, the aborigines of Aba have all it takes to serve their fatherland well. He must also show that Aba is a home for all by carrying everyone along”.

Governor Ikpeazu also congratulates the leadership and members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the State for the great unity they displayed in this election and states that the future of the party in the State is indeed very bright. This victory confirms that indeed, PDP remains the party of choice in Abia State.

The Governor adds that the outcome of this election is a clear message that the days of unproductive family oligarchies are gone in Abia State.

Governor Ikpeazu ends by thanking the great people of Aba for showing confidence in his administration and assures them that he will remain relentless in the pursuit to turn around the infrastructural foundations of the Enyimba City.

BREAKING: PROF GREGORY IBE CONGRATULATES MEMBER-ELECT CHIMAOBI EBISIKE

The Chancellor of the prestigious Gregory University Uturu, Professor Gregory Ibe has congratulated the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate for the Aba North/South federal Constituency bye-election, Hon. Chimaobi Ebisike for his resounding victory at the polls.

He also congrated the leader of PDP in Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, the state PDP party chairman Rt. Hon. Asiforo Okere, all PDP members and the entire constituents of Aba North/ South Federal Constituency.

Professor Ibe was speaking when he received the cheering news of the landslide victory as announced by the INEC returning officer for the election. He said he was not surprised at the huge margin of lead by the PDP candidate given the eloquent infrastructural development the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has put in place in Aba. “It is only normal that the people of Aba reciprocated such infrastructural gestures by voting the PDP” he added.

He therefore urged the Member-elect to emulate the sterling performance of the Governor, Dr. Ikpeazu and to endeavour to replicate same at the green chamber of the national assembly. He called on Abians to continue supporting the PDP as it is the only party on ground in the state which has people oriented policies.

He concluded by appreciating voters in Aba North and South Federal Constituency for conducting themselves in an orderly manner throughout the pre and election proper processes, enjoining them to continue to prayerfully support Hon Ebisike in the post election phase and reassured them that he would bring back the goods.

It will be recalled that Prof Ibe had in answer to Governor Ikpeazu’s call mobilised massive support for Hon Ebisike to ensure victory for PDP at the just concluded bye-election.

CAMPAIGN TO SAVE PDP FROM TOTAL EXTINCTION PART 1, by Mr. Iyioku Shepherd Chijioke

The worst and greatest destruction that could befall a man is when he remains unrepentant and unreasonable to tendencies that brought about his downfall repeatedly.

The continuous skimmings of a governor and a few individuals to pocket the largest political party in the entire black race, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and make it their personal franchise has become a major challenge that is bound to destroy and bury our party in a shallow grave with undignified ceremony.

I have said this repeatedly that when you give a zoo man who lacks natural wisdom power and in that power he finds excess money, that such a man will automatically become like a bull in Chinese shop. You will see in him the height of stupidity and irrationality and these would culminate in his manifestation of autocratic, exploitative and selfish tendencies leading to misrule. Such persons would see themselves as tin gods; thus behaving like lord of the manor. It either goes their way or everything is destroyed.

The recent massive outcry and condemnation of the position of the party’s Committee on Zoning/Rotation of the presidential ticket come 2023 is a sign that this once dreaded and largest party in the entire black race, our own PDP, is at the verge of going into total extinction if urgent steps are not taken to address this issue wholistically.

The bitter truth is that if PDP fails to win the 2023 presidential election as a result of the selfish disposition of a few tin gods within the party, PDP will be dead, buried and forgotten.

The Sen. Abudullah Muhammad led committee’s report which has been submitted to the National Working Committee of our party on this burning and contentious zoning and rotation of the presidential ticket matter has been receiving wide condemnation because it is being seen as a decision lacking in proper thoughts and therefore has the capacity to bring the party to ruination.

The leadership/elders of our great party must understand that even those who are not members of the party, who are largely frustrated and tired with APC’s administration and are looking at PDP as an alternative party to change the APC government come 2023, are more disappointed with this very unpopular recommendation, and so view the party with much contempt as one derailed off the track for the 2023 presidential race if urgent steps are not taken to restore the tradition of zoning and rotation of the presidential ticket which had been the case ever since the formation of the party.

It has become imperative for the leaders, elders and stakeholders of our great party to address this issue of zoning/rotation of political offices at all levels as the party had always done, starting from the national, states, local governments, and down to the wards. It is our belief, and the general public holds this position too, that no single Individual, region, state, senatorial district, federal constituency and so on can claim exclusive reservoir of competence and capacity for any elective position in this country.

In view of this, we Are saying that the recommendation of the committee of Sen. Abudullah Muhammad, the Governor of Bauchi State, that the presidential ticket of the party be open to the six geopolitical zones in the country ostensibly on grounds of competence and capacity is an argument fraught with much weakness, besides the suspicion of irredentist hypocrisy that it serves. It is also seen as a conspiracy to perpetuate power in one region or at best kill the party if it would not serve the selfish interest of the clannish few.

The above projection is bound to happen if the issue of zoning/power rotation is not addressed urgently. This is because as PDP may likely lose woefully in the presidential poll come 2023, the party will also lose many states where they presently govern as a fall out of protest votes against the party.

In view of the impending doom against our beloved party, we ask you to join us in the campaign to rescue our great party, PDP, from desperados and hawks who lack the temperament, savvy, composure, character, patience, tolerance, wisdom, intelligence and knowledge required of good leadership that can wrestle and eventually defeat the vicious circle and power drunken blocks of All Progressives Congress (APC), which even in the middle of crisis is breaking new grounds, winning new converts most of whom unfortunately are from PDP and these includes the Ebonyi State governor, Chief. Engr. Dave Umahi who recently defected to APC.

The recent widely rumoured mass defection of some prominent PDP governors like that of Bauchi, Zamfara, Adamawa and even our own Enugu State cannot be divorced from the excesses of one governor along with his few members of the party who feels he can hajack the party from his fellow governors who are all financers of the party.

In the coming weeks, besides our media advocacy in this struggle, we shall be engaging our party leaders, elders and stakeholders in ensuring that we together rescue our party from impending extinction.

Stay tuned for part 2 of this series.

Coordinator ENUGU STATE PEACE AMBASSADORS (ENSPA).

2023: Anyone from any geopolitical zone can run for president, says PDP committee

The 2019 Elections Review Committee set up by Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to assess its performance in the last general election, has urged the leadership of the party to allow interested party members vie for the 2023 Presidency, irrespective of their geo-political zones.

Chairman of the committee and governor of Bauchi state, Senator Bala Mohammed, gave the recommendation at the party’s secretariat, Abuja, while presenting the report of the committee to the National Working Committee of the PDP yesterday. The committee anchored its position on the fact that across the land, Nigeria boasts of good hands capable of bailing the country “out of her current quagmire.”

He said: “In line with certain unwritten conventions of the nation’s history, many people think that, for fairness and equity, the North-East and South-East geo-political zones that have had the shortest stints at the Presidency, should be given special consideration, in choosing the presidential flagbearer of the party, for the 2023 elections.

“While we admit that this is a strong argument, we should not lose sight of the fact that Nigeria is endowed with many capable and very experienced leaders in every part of the country. Moreover, the exigencies of the moment demand that nothing should be compromised in choosing the leader, with the attributes to disentangle the country from the present quagmire.

“Therefore, we think that every Nigerian, from every part of the country, should be given the opportunity to choose the best candidate, through a credible primary election; as a way of institutionalising a merit-based leadership recruitment process, for the country.”

The committee also called for support of ongoing electoral reforms, while urging the military to take the back seat in the conduct of future elections. “The party should actively encourage the current reform by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to make it truly independent and to be able to conduct elections devoid of the coercive apparatus of the state, underhand manipulations and outright intimidation of voters.

“The military should be insulated from the conduct of elections as their presence breeds intimidation and questions the integrity of the process. Above all, it denies some of the candidates the level playing field that is the singular barometer for ascertaining the wishes of the people. Similarly, the police should be made to be more impartial in the supervision of elections.

“The endemic frictions in inter-governmental relations, especially between the states and the federal government, suggest that the present constitutional arrangement is grossly inadequate to contend with changing democratic and demographic challenges.

“Our party must, therefore, push for either a review and endorsement of the 2014 constitutional conference report or for a new constitutional conference to be organised.

‘’In short, the party should advocate genuine restructuring that fosters decentralisation, engenders national unity, guarantees security of lives and properties of all Nigerians no matter where they reside in the country and which promotes economic prosperity and the overall well-being of all our people.’’

To make progress, particularly with 2023 in sight, the Bala Mohammed-led committee urged the leadership of the PDP to promote practices that will deepen democracy, promote national unity and inspire greater faith in our country, especially, among the youth and the several stakeholder groups yearning for inclusion,” the reported stressed.

It also made case for youths and women inclusiveness in governance model of the PDP going forward.

“Cognisant of the generational and gender shifts all over the globe and the emergence of a new generation of Nigerians who are not held down by religion, ethnicity or such other primordial considerations but who are determined to mainstream the country into global best practices; the party should set aside, a certain percentage of elective and appointive offices, for the youth and women.

“The EndSARS movement, a few months back, was the testimony we needed, that a new generation of young, bold, ambitious and detribalized Nigerians have taken centre-stage and that their legitimate clamour for inclusion and good governance can only be ignored to the peril of the party and indeed Nigeria,” the committee emphasized.

In his keynote address, national chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, thanked the committee for a job well done. He said: “The committee was set up to look back and find out how we fared in 2019 and why we got the outcome. Your terms of reference said it all that, ‘to among others identify the remote and immediate causes responsible for the loss of the 2019 presidential election.

“The National Working Committee monitored diligently your committee performance, how you embarked on wide range consultations with critical stakeholders of our party particularly founding fathers and also your involvement of consultants and other technical hands.

“I have no doubt in my mind that your report will form the bedrock of our party’s plan ahead of 2023 general elections. The NWC is going to study and analyze your report meticulously and come up with a position that will be beneficial to the party.

“The PDP is leaving no stone unturned to ensure it regains federal power and this report is going to be the take off point and keystone to our subsequent actions ahead of 2023.”

He urged President Muhammadu Buhari “to embark on immediate electoral reform that will ensure free, fair and transparent elections in the country and put Nigeria in parity with other developed democracies in the world.

“Relying on the recommendations of this report, the NWC will work with think tanks, consultants and all critical stakeholders of our great party to enhance the new PDP narratives that will help address the yawning absence of leadership in the country.

“We will continue to build the party along the line of the recommendations with a view to cultivating wide support base with utmost urgency towards 2023.”

The event was attended by top party chieftains including Chief Tom Ikimi, Tanimu Turaki, Adolphus Wabara, Bukola Saraki, Ike Ekweremadu, Enyinnaya Abaribe, Dino Melaye, Stella Omu among others.

How APC leaders frittered away N15 trillion under Buhari–PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Wednesday chided the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, over what it called the ruling party’s attempt to cover some of its leaders who siphoned and frittered over N15 trillion from the national coffers, instead of advising President Muhammadu Buhari to recover the looted funds from them.

In a statement signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, spokesman of the party, the PDP said the alleged cover up “is a classical case of corruption in the APC fighting back and justifying its loathsome activities.”

The statement read: “Since the APC has now turned itself into the mouthpiece in defence for the stolen N15 trillion, our party invites Nigerians to also hold the Mai Buni-led APC leadership accountable for this humongous treasury looting, which is responsible for escalated unemployment, collapse of infrastructure and hardship in our nation.”

“PDP asserts the shameful attempt by the APC National Caretaker Committee to justify and provide cover for looters in their party at a time over 40 million Nigerians have lost their means of livelihood, with many more living in abject poverty because of the unbridled widespread looting by APC leaders, further confirms that the APC is an irredeemable citadel of corruption.

“It is not surprising that the Governor Mai Mai Buni-led APC leadership has become the mouthpiece for the treasury looters in their party, whose conduct has brought our nation to its knees in the last five years.

“We invite the new spokesperson in the APC to answer to the leaked NNPC official memo which detailed how a whooping N9.3 trillion was stolen by alleged APC leaders as well as the reported N1.1 trillion worth of crude allegedly stolen with 18 unregistered ship belonging to certain APC leaders.

“This is in addition to the reports in the public space of over N3 trillion stolen from various agencies including the Federal Inland Revenue Services, FIRS, National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, the Social Investment Programmes where the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, exposed that N500 billion was siphoned as well as the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA)l, in which a very top APC government official was indicted.

“The APC spokesperson should answer the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, over its recent report that unemployment had escalated to an alarming 33.3 per cent under the corrupt and treasury looting APC administration; a revelation that shows that claims of massive job creation by the deceptive APC are mere statistic hoax.

“Furthermore, the APC mouthpiece should respond to reports by credible international bodies such as Transparency International (TI) that corruption in Nigeria has worsened under the APC, with our nation falling 13 places in the corruption index since 2015 under the watch of their “Mr. Integrity”

“It is clear that the APC is seeking ways to cover the looting of N15 trillion belonging to our nation as Nigerians are clamoring for the investigation of the indicted APC leaders and recovery of the money.”

How APC ‘captured me’ – Former Ogun Governor Gbenga Daniel

Former Ogun Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel has joined the ruling party, the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Recall that the former governor served as campaign manager of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in 2019 Abubakar Atiku.

In a statement, Daniel apologised to his former party for the short notice, stating that his support for Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun, was a pointer.

Gbenga Daniel explained that the decision took a speedy curve after a request of the national caretaker Chairman of APC to visit him along with three governors on Wednesday.

He wrote: “Dear friends & colleagues, pardon my short notice in informing you of my route to the APC which as you might have suspected started with my supporting Governor Dapo Abiodun during the last election.

“I have since experienced an avalanche of encouragement to come on board.

“However in the last 48 hours things took a dizzying speed with the decision of the APC National Chairman request to visit me at Asoludero on Wednesday with about three Governors.

“While planning for the visit Governor Abiodun also decided to visit me later today with another set of Governors later today.

“It therefore means that I have finally been ‘captured’ “I thought I should quickly brief the house before the news go viral. Thanks for your understanding”, he wrote.

PDP Boils As NWC Splits Over Secondus

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP was on Tuesday boiling after a stormy meeting of the National Working Committee, NWC put the national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus on the spot. The NWC was split over Secondus’ stewardship of the party and prospects of leading it to victory in 2023.

The NWC it was gathered was divided over what some members alleged as the party’s incapacity to take opportunity of the gaffes of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC on account of what they alleged as the poor leadership.

The issue of leadership apathy was compounded by the management of the party issues notably, crises in some Northern chapters of the party and the continued suspension of some members of the National Assembly.

Other issues alleging to financial misdemanour were raised at the meeting, but those issues were according to sources in the meeting overshadowed by what was alleged as the lethargy in the leadership of the party.

The PDP had suspended Ndudi Elumelu, Wole Oke, Lynda Ikpeazu, Anayo Edwin, Gideon Gwadi, Toby Okechukwu and Adekoya Abdul-Majid for allegedly backing the emergence of Femi Gbajabiamila as Speaker of the House of Representatives against the intentions of the party.

Whereas the PDP had nominated Kingsley Chinda for the position of minority leader and also proposed Chukwuka Onyema as Deputy Minority Leader, Yakubu Barde as Minority Whip and Muraina Ajibola as Deputy Minority Whip.

However, Speaker Gbajabiamila spurned the PDP’s nominees and endorsed the list led by Elumelu with Toby Okechukwu (Enugu) as Deputy Minority Leader, Gideon Gwani as Minority Whip and Adesegun Adekoya as Deputy Minority Whip.

At the NWC meeting on Tuesday, Secondus was, however, on the spot on lifting the suspension as the proposal seemed to put him between the devil and the deep blue sea.

Lifting the suspension is bound to raise issues with some governors who accused the National Assembly ‘rebels’ of having betrayed the party during the election that brought Gbajabiamila.

Secondus has reportedly been at discord with Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and it was feared that lifting the suspension would further put him in trouble with the governor.

The meeting which was supposed to last between 12 noon and 2.00 p.m. lasted at least two more hours as the NWC tried to mollify hot tempers as the PDP NWC was split over Secondus.

“It was a stormy meeting and at least two prominent national officers threatened to resign saying that they would not want to be dragged down with what is happening,” a source present at the meeting disclosed.

“Most of the issues we have especially in the North have to do with poor party management,” one official present at the meeting who did not want to be named said.

Jigawa and Kano States are two of the prominent states which have been riven with crises.
