The United States on Thursday condemned what it called excessive use of force by the Nigerian military for firing on unarmed demonstrators.

Amnesty International says at least 12 people were killed by the Nigerian army and police in a brutal crackdown on protesters Tuesday that drew international condemnation.”We welcome an immediate investigation into any use of excessive force by members of the security forces,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.

Nigeria’s army has dubbed as “fake news” reports that soldiers opened fire on demonstrators.
Police Minister Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi told the BBC that troops were not ordered to open fire on protesters.

Pompeo said that those involved “should be held to account in accordance with Nigerian law.”
“The right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are essential human rights and core democratic principles,” Pompeo said.

Fire guts Lekki Toll Gate Plaza, Oriental Hotel, GTB, Polaris, Zenith banks after Army kill several protesters, injure over 30 @Lekki Toll Gate

Fire has gutted the Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge toll plaza.

The fire affected the cubicles of the toll gate on Tuesday night.

The toll plaza was gutted by fire a few hours after soldiers allegedly killed protesters at the Lekki toll gate.

The fire also affected Oriental Hotel, GTB, Polaris, Zenith Banks all on Admiralty Way, Ikoyi.

Several eyewitnesses confirmed that soldiers of the Nigerian army opened fire on #EndSARS demonstrators who refused to leave the Lekki gates on Tuesday night.

So far, 9 persons have been confirmed dead while more than 30 others were hit by bullets, and are currently in hospitals receiving treatment.

There have been earlier reports of soldiers carting away the bodies of those who were shot, in an apparent move to hide evidence of the massacre.

Other reports say that the soldiers also prevented ambulances from accessing the scene of the shooting to assist the injured. They were also said to have visited some hospitals that night in order to fish out the dead and injured.

It’s irresponsible to attack #ENDSARS protesters – Eholor

Following attacks on #ENDSARS protesters across the country, social crusader and President One Love Foundation, Chief Patrick Osagie Eholor has condemned the attacks demanding an end to police brutality and all related abuses nationwide.

According to Eholor, the peaceful protest is fast yielding results with the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and setting up a judicial panel of enquiry by state governments.

He maintained that the protests were legitimate, and young people who ignited the movement have a right to express their grievances using the weapon of protest.

Eholor, in a statement endorsed by him urged the government to protect the peaceful protesters instead of attacking them.

The leader of One Love Foundation noted that the protest is an affirmation of the readiness of the youths to resist bad governance in all its ramifications.

“This protest is the result of accumulated anger of the Nigerian youths over decades of failure in the delivery of basic social services, unemployment, systemic corruption, impunity by those in powers and disobedience to the rule of law which has precipitated distrust and lack of confidence in the state and its institutions.”

According to him, these frustrations are visible in the faces and attitudes of the Nigerian youth who have no job nor shelter, good hospitals nor schools, good road nor electricity.

“I affirm the validity of the protests and the grievances driving the mobilization and organization of popular anger. Police brutality in particular, and the brutality of security, armed forces, and law enforcement agents towards citizens, in general, is a fact and a reality that cannot be contradicted.”

Eholor also reaffirmed the readiness of One Love Foundation to drive the message of good governance and reorientation of the Nigerian youths. He further urged the federal government to reduce the cost of governance and increase the salaries of men of the Nigeria Police Force. He noted that poor welfare of the officers were the resultant attacks the masses were getting from them.

“One Love Foundation as a group is ready to assist the government in reorienting the masses about patriotism especially in having confidence of the Nigerian State. A lot of people believe that the nation is drifting to a failed state but if the government assure us of their readiness to invest in youths and attend to their request, we are capable of engaging them.”

“I have said it severally that we cannot police Nigeria without proper funding and motivation. The government should increase the salaries of the police for effective service delivery. You cannot be paying an Officer less than $200 and expect the person to perform magic.”

#EndSARS: Faces of Disbanded SARS, as Lagos CP Odumosu Debriefs Them

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, on Wednesday debriefed the operatives of the disbanded Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS; Anti-Kidnapping Squad, Anti Cultism Squad and Raider in Lagos State at the Command’s Headquarters, Ikeja.

The debriefing was in compliance with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to disband and ground the activities of the teams in the state; and that their operations, investigations and pending cases be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, with immediate effect.

The police boss seized the opportunity to inform them officially of the formation of the new Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) to tackle armed robbery, kidnapping, violent and other weapon-related crimes in the country, which is applicable to Lagos State.

He warned them to desist from parading themselves as SARS operatives or any operatives under whatever nomenclature in the state, and that all their cases and operational uniforms/wears or attires be handed over to State CID, Panti, while their satellite offices across the state be taken over and occupied by the nearest Divisional Police Headquarters in the areas respectively.

The Commissioner of Police, however, appealed to the general public to inform and report to the command of any activities or misconduct of any police personnel claiming to be SARS operative in the state or venturing into opening or investigating cases under the SARS or any of the disbanded tactical teams in Lagos State.

In the same vein, he further appealed to protesters to be law-abiding, maintain peace and respect the rights and opinions of other Lagosians and by extension, Nigerians, in the state; emphasising that the blockage of access roads to other Nigerians was unnecessary.
