Nkwuda and Nwoba were allegedly abducted and buried alive by seven persons, including two witch doctors, who have been arrested by the state police command over the crime.

Investigations revealed that their boys were earlier arrested by the police over the disappearance of some members of the community who allegedly visited their shrine.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Loveth Odah, who confirmed the incident, explained that preliminary investigations revealed that those who would have been buried alive by the native doctors were four but two managed to escape.

BREAKING: Many feared dead, houses burnt, as Fulani herdsmen attack Ngbo community in Ebonyi

Fulani herdsmen in the early hours on Monday attacked a village in Ngbo community of Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

It was gathered that many have allegedly lost their lives following the development as houses of innocent indigenes of the area have been burnt down by the rampaging herdsmen in the area.

Ebonyi State Government had, on Wednesday, last week, put modalities in place for the setting up of 1,000 vigilante groups across the state.

The attack, which has been described as unprecedented, affected Ebele village in Umuogodoakpa Community as some victims of the incident are presently taking shelter in the homes of some stakeholders.

Recall that herdsmen had attacked four communities in Ishielu Local Government Area where over 25 innocent rural dwellers were massacred in cold blood.

As at the time of filing this report, no suspect has been arrested or paraded by the Ebonyi State Police Command in connection with the killings.

Another three Umahi aides resign, return to PDP

Three more aides of the Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, have resigned their appointments with the state government.

The aides, who until their resignation were technical assistants to the governor, are Nwigbo Ransomed, Amaechi Nwovu and Onweagu Chika.

It was learnt that following their resignation, the ex-aides had joined the Peoples Democratic Party from the ruling All Progressives Congress.

This is coming barely three days after two aides of the governor resigned their appointments and defected to the PDP from the APC.

The letters of resignation of the latest defectors were dated March 16, March 10 and February 22, 2021, respectively.

The respective letters of resignation stated, “I, Onweagu Chika, most sincerely wish to appreciate you for your appointing me as a Technical Assistant on Water Resources. I am indeed humbled for your kind gesture to me as I served in your government. I hereby resign.”

“I, Amaechi Nwovu E., most humbly bring to your notice, Your Excellency, of my resignation as a Technical Assistant to the Governor on Water Resources with effect from March 10, 2021. The reason for my resignation is personal and best known to me.”

“Please, accept this letter as a formal notification to resign my position as a Technical Assistant to the Governor on Environment effective from February 22, 2021. I am Nwigbo Ransomed.”

Many killed in Ebonyi renewed communal crisis

No fewer than seven persons were on Tuesday confirmed killed in a renewed communal war between Ezza- Effium and Effium in Ebonyi State.
Recall that there has been a lingering communal crisis between Ezza-Effium and Effium people since January this year, which resulted in the killing of hundreds of persons and destruction of property worth millions of Naira.

Ebonyi State Governor, Chief David Umahi had summoned and arrested prominent leaders as well as stakeholders of the two communities in a bid to end the killings, but the two warring communities have remained adamant.

When contacted, the Commissioner for Internal Security, boarder peace and conflict resolution, Mr. Stanley Okoro Emegha confirmed the renewed killings but threatened that the state government will clampdown and rearrest the stakeholders for allowing the war to subsist.
According to him: “As for how many that were killed this morning, police will let us know. Government has done what it’s supposed to do to make sure that the peace which lasted for three weeks now is sustained. But the State government will not be tired of tackling this security situation in that community.

“We will find out what is really the problem again that caused this renewed crisis.
“We are not yet sure whether those killed were up to four or six persons as people who are from that place are saying. It is still a rumour until we are sure. However, it is the duty of the government to provide security and we have deployed more troops to the place.

“I don’t know why this has continued, in fact, the state government will take a certain measure that is harder. We will ensure that all the stakeholders are rearrested,” he stated.

However, an unconfirmed report from sources in Effium community alleged that over twenty innocent persons were reportedly killed by warlords during the renewed hostilities.
In a swift reaction, the Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command, CP. Aliyu Garba confirmed that it is only one person that was killed in the renewed hostilities in Effium community.

“Police is doing everything possible to put an end to the crisis in Effium community. We have understood the modus operandi on how both Ezza-Effium and Effium operate. There is no need of blowing Effium crisis. Only one person was killed,” he stated.

Ebonyi leaders instigating crisis, APC about God, people – Umahi

Ebonyi Governor, David Umahi, has accused some political leaders in the State of causing violence.

He told the new Police Commissioner, Aliyu Garba to tackle insecurity in Ebonyi.

Umahi spoke in Abakaliki, the state capital, on Wednesday when Garba visited him, NAN reports.

“You are coming at a very trying moment and should deal decisively with anyone instigating insecurity. It should be stated that some leaders instigate crises but when it comes to security issues, my party is God and the people,” he said.

Umahi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) accused the past police leadership of hobnobbing with politicians.

“I nearly severed my relationship with the police but was restrained by the integrity of its Inspector General. How can police officers be inside their offices and hoodlums would attack them and collect their guns?” He asked.

The governor said it happened more than three times under the former police boss.

“It is unfortunate. Cultists would be arrested and three or four days later, they are released into the society to further cause problems,” he said.

Umahi disclosed that his administration would soon distribute operational vehicles to security agencies.

Umahi warned new Coordinators of Local Government Development Centres and Special Assistants against disloyalty.

In his remarks, Garba pledged to ensure the protection of the peoples’ lives and property.

2023: Ebonyi Indigenes in Diaspora kick against zoning

As 2023 governorship election in Ebonyi state gathers momentum, some indigenes of the state under the platform of Association of Ebonyi State Indigenes in the Diaspora (AESID) have said that competence and credibility will determine who emerge the next governor and not zoning.

The association implored Ebonyi people to continue to study the records in and out of office of any contender and place same side-by-side with the prevailing challenges facing the state and seek out for only those who can reverse the negative indices.

In a statement signed and released to newsmen on Sunday by its President, Ambassador Paschal Oluchukwu, urged the people to ignore “paid political permutators, jobbers and hatchets men mislead, misdirect or misinform Ebonyi people as they battle to choose a credible and competent leader who would take-over the baton as Governor David Nweze Umahi’s successor.”

The association was reacting to an opinion piece by one Sunday Okwerike- one of the Izhi youngsters on social media who lamented that the rest of Ebonyians should probably leave the battle of Umahi’s successor in 2023 to only his Izhi clan.

But while responding to the development, the AESID said Ebonyi people will also not support to be elected into the office of Governor in 2023, any leader or persons who have records of having been used particularly by the Umahi administration to dispense mindless violence on Ebonyians with many of such leading to deaths of the young and elderly.

“First, AESID wishes to assert that the number one criteria which we implore every Ebonyian and lover our dear State to seek out in any intending aspirant or candidate is COMPETENCE and CREDIBILITY which would ultimately translate into such a leader’s capacity to reverse the numerous growing negative statistics and economic woes that the current government of Umahi has brought upon our dear State.

“Apart from the incontrovertible fact that there has never been a time when the rest of the zones in the State allowed only aspirants and candidates from a particular part of the State to seek the Governorship office in keeping with the so-called unwritten charter of equity, power as such pundits and analysts should be made to know only comes from above and it is never given but taken.

“Much more than the zone of an aspirant, AESID would, we reiterate implore Ebonyi people to continue to study the records in and out of office of any contender and place same side-by-side with the prevailing challenges facing the young State and seek out for only those who can reverse the negative indices.

“We, as a group has variously raised the alarm over the rising poverty in the State which has placed us in a woeful third position among the 36 States of the federation and whoever wish to succeed Umahi must not only be worried about this ugly trend but have the feasible prognosis to proffer credible solutions to them.”

According to Oluchukwu, the government of Engr. Umahi has remained a family business with capital flights being the order of the day.

“Governor Umahi boasts that he knows even the costs of production and supply of ordinary nails, all because he is the sole supplier all to and by himself and his family. This is why the government has placed higher premium on concrete roads, flyovers and decorative water fountains cum lights over and above the economic survival of a greater number of Ebonyians. Come 2023, Ebonyi people should choose, follow, support and elect a leader who would run an all-inclusive government that would see humans as humans and not as machines.

“It is our firm believe that the economic prosperity of Ebonyi people is more important than the antiquated zoning of political positions that would not afford us to put our best foot forward as Umahi’s successor in 2023. More so, our people will not elect any leader who has shown manifest greed and looting of previously or presently occupied public office, neither would we encourage them to support anyone hanging on the shoulders of any leader who has vaults in his massive country-home wherein he’s been saving looted public funds.”

9 confirmed killed in Ebonyi cult clash

Ebonyi Commissioner for Border Peace and Internal Security, Stanley Okoro-Emegha

The Ebonyi Government, on Monday, said that nine persons were killed in a renewed clash between two rival cults in the state.

The Commissioner for Border Peace and Internal Security, Mr Stanley Okoro-Emegha, made the disclosure in Abakaliki while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the state Security Council meeting.

Okoro-Emegha, who is also the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, said that 37 suspected cult members had also been arrested by security agencies.

“It is pertinent to note that some members of the Neighbourhood Security Watch, the state’s security outfit, were among those arrested for the cult-related activities.

“The suspects will soon be charged to court, as the government is exploring all avenues to eradicate cultism in the state.

“The government has also given security agencies seven days to expose cult members in the state or take the blame for cult disturbances,” he said.

The commissioner assured residents of a secured yuletide, with efforts already made to protect the lives and property of the citizens.

“The government requested that divisional police officers and other security enforcers in all the local government areas attend the meeting to evolve ways of protecting the people during the yuletide.

“The security officers at the council areas complained of logistic challenges, such as operational vehicles and the governor pledged to swiftly address the challenges.

“The aesthetic nature of the state has been greatly enhanced by the governor and visitors will be thronging the state during the yuletide.

“Traditional rulers and town union leaders, among others, will be held liable in cases of disturbances in their areas, as they were also enjoined to ensure adequate security,” he said.

The commissioner also stated that 9,000 live cartridges were recently discovered at a building material market, adding that the owner of the shop, where they were discovered, was being interrogated by security agencies.

Abia Onyeike abandons APC, returns to PDP, says he can’t cope with Umahi’s style

An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and former Commissioner for Information and State Orientation in Ebonyi State, Chief Abia Onyeike, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to him, his decision to return to PDP remains that Governor Umahi is not prepared to change his ‘dictatorial, totalitarian and autocratic leadership style’ in the governance of Ebonyi state.

He alleged that this has unleashed mass poverty and mass impoverishment on Ebonyi citizenry.

Onyeike made this known in an open letter on Thursday while noting that the present leaders of PDP in the state “now are tested leaders and like-minded patriots who are committed to the genuine development of Ebonyi State.”

He said, “I will remain opposed to Gov. Umahi’s government because of his lawless approach to governance and administration. The PDP in Ebonyi State must be used as a liberation movement to rescue Ebonyians from the stranglehold of Gov Umahi, whose inordinate ambition is to hand over power to his proxy with his son as the next speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, come 2023.

“That Gov. David Umahi is not prepared to turn a new leaf in his dictatorial, totalitarian and autocratic leadership style in the governance of Ebonyi State – a situation that has unleashed mass poverty and mass impoverishment on Ebonyi citizenry.

“Gov Umahi wants to continue in his usual government of anarchy through which instability, violence and lawlessness are exacerbated in the governance of the state. As we speak, a new wave of killings and loss of lives is gradually unfolding in the state in Ezza North and Ezza South LGAs, no thanks to the regime of impunity prevalent in the state. The political space is already fouled by antagonistic propaganda being fuelled and targeted against those wanting to toe a different and independent path of political party affiliation, especially those who have expressed their resolve to be in PDP.

Onyeike alleged that Umahi sees public office not as an instrument for the provision of welfare for the citizenry, but as a platform for personal and family aggrandisement.

DEFECTION: Umahi sacks Sam Egwu’s kinsmen from cabinet despite solidarity

The Ebonyi Governor, Chief David Umahi, has sacked political appointees from Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state.

Umahi gave the order on Friday in a statement signed and issued to newsmen in Abakaliki by the Secretary to the State government, Mr Kenneth Ugbala.

“In the avowed determination of Ebonyi State Government to allow greater participation of people in governance, Gov. David Umahi has approved the sack of political appointees from Ohaukwu Local Government Area with immediate effect.

“The office holders include: all the Coordinators, all the Executive Assistants (EAs), all the Senior Technical Assistants (STAs).

“Others include all the Technical Assistants (TAs), all the Liaison Officers and all the Management Committee Members of Development Centres,” Umahi stated.

“All the affected officers are directed to handover all the State Government property in their possession to the Secretary to the State Government before the close of work on Monday, Nov. 23,” he directed.

Ironically, the sack came barely hours after stakeholders of Ohaukwu LGA threw their weight behind Governor Umahi, who days earlier defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The stakeholders who made their position known at a meeting held at the Council headquarters, Ezzamgbo, said they were solidly behind Governor Umahi, adding that the people of the Council were 99.9% APC.

The Chairman of the Council, Barrister Clement Odah, who addressed journalists on behalf of the stakeholders, said the people of the council had benefitted heavily from Umahi’s administration, assuring that they were fully with him.

According to him, on moral ground, none of them is entitled to take a different direction other than the direction of the Governor.

He maintained that Ohaukwu people would deliver 100% votes to the APC in 2023.

Senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial district and first civilian Governor of Ebonyi State, Dr Sam Egwu, who is opposed to Umahi’s defection to APC hails from Ohaukwu LGA.

Odah said: “Ohaukwu Local Government are part and parcel of the All Progressives Congress (APC). At a personal level, I want to let the world know that I am the son of the Governor, David Umahi. He made me what I am today. As long as politics is concerned, he is the beginning and the end of my political sojourn. He remains my father, benefactor, and boss.

“Beyond me, we have appointees of Government and elected persons here. All of us are beneficiaries of the magnanimity of the Governor. On moral ground, none of us is entitled to take a different direction other than the direction of the Governor.

“As a people, we have witnessed tremendous development in our area. We have the gigantic and longest flyover and only a person that loves you can give you such a gift.

“Every Ohaukwu man, every Ohaukwu youth and every Ohaukwu woman will continue to support the Governor. As long as we are concerned, this LGA is 99.9 percent APC. I would have said Ohaukwu is 100 percent, but our Governor himself has conceded 0.01% for a certain class of persons.

“If anybody is not in agreement with the Governor, the question is: what are your reasons? We have flyovers, good roads, ecumenical centre, international airport, international stadium and international market. We have all the good things we see in Dubai. Anybody saying we shouldn’t stand with David Umahi, does he have anything better than what he had offered us? So, we stand with the Governor and we will always stand by him.”

Also speaking, the State Commissioner for Water Resources, Mr Sunday Inyima, who was rumored to have resigned his appointment sequel to the defection of Umahi to APC, described the rumor as false, insisting that the entire Ohaukwu people including himself, were solidly behind Governor Umahi.
