The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State has swept the Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency bye-election which held yesterday in all the polling units of the constituency.
Declaring PDP’s Chimaobi Ebisike winner of the election, the Resident Electoral Commissioner announced that the PDP polled 10,322 votes against its closet rival APC which polled 3,674 votes. Others are APGA 1,554 votes, AA 199 votes, ARM 13 votes and APM 8.
With the victory, Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency will now be represented by PDP’s Chimaobi Ebisike at the National Assembly.
Recall that the bye-election was scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the unfortunate demise in February of Hon Ossy Prestige of APGA who until his death was the Lawmaker representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency.
Ebisike’s Victory Vindicates Our Hardwork and Endorses Our Message of Justice and Equity in Aba – Ikpeazu
Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has described the resounding victory of the PDP in yesterday’s bye election for the Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency as a clear vindication of the hardwork his administration has put into the repositioning of Aba.
In his official response to the victory of Hon. Chimaobi Ebisike of the PDP in the bye election, the Governor stated that the bye election was a first hand opportunity for the people of Aba to pass judgment on the efforts of his administration in rebuilding the broken walls of the Enyimba City. The Governor is grateful to God Almighty for His grace which made this victory possible.
“For all intents and purposes, this election was more appropriately, a referendum by the people of Aba on our work in the city. Our government has invested lots of effort in providing critical infrastructure in Aba and it is heartwarming to see that indeed, the people truly appreciate our efforts. It is also a clear message that our people detest injustice. The people of Aba completely endorsed our message that it was only just, fair and proper to allow the aborigines of Aba an opportunity to represent their own people for the first time in 22 years of our democracy at the National Assembly”.
The Governor congratulates the National Assembly Member-Elect, Hon. Chimaobi Ebisike and urged him to see his victory, first as God’s plan for his life and then as an opportunity to offer dedicated and selfless service to his own people.
“It is a massive privilege to be called upon to serve your own people. Ebisike must appreciate the historic nature of his election and what it means for the people of Aba. He must remain humble and work with dedication in the interest of the people of Aba. He must learn from his forebearers at the National Assembly, especially those who have made their people proud. He must prove that indeed, the aborigines of Aba have all it takes to serve their fatherland well. He must also show that Aba is a home for all by carrying everyone along”.
Governor Ikpeazu also congratulates the leadership and members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the State for the great unity they displayed in this election and states that the future of the party in the State is indeed very bright. This victory confirms that indeed, PDP remains the party of choice in Abia State.
The Governor adds that the outcome of this election is a clear message that the days of unproductive family oligarchies are gone in Abia State.
Governor Ikpeazu ends by thanking the great people of Aba for showing confidence in his administration and assures them that he will remain relentless in the pursuit to turn around the infrastructural foundations of the Enyimba City.
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Wednesday chided the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, over what it called the ruling party’s attempt to cover some of its leaders who siphoned and frittered over N15 trillion from the national coffers, instead of advising President Muhammadu Buhari to recover the looted funds from them.
In a statement signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, spokesman of the party, the PDP said the alleged cover up “is a classical case of corruption in the APC fighting back and justifying its loathsome activities.”
The statement read: “Since the APC has now turned itself into the mouthpiece in defence for the stolen N15 trillion, our party invites Nigerians to also hold the Mai Buni-led APC leadership accountable for this humongous treasury looting, which is responsible for escalated unemployment, collapse of infrastructure and hardship in our nation.”
“PDP asserts the shameful attempt by the APC National Caretaker Committee to justify and provide cover for looters in their party at a time over 40 million Nigerians have lost their means of livelihood, with many more living in abject poverty because of the unbridled widespread looting by APC leaders, further confirms that the APC is an irredeemable citadel of corruption.
“It is not surprising that the Governor Mai Mai Buni-led APC leadership has become the mouthpiece for the treasury looters in their party, whose conduct has brought our nation to its knees in the last five years.
“We invite the new spokesperson in the APC to answer to the leaked NNPC official memo which detailed how a whooping N9.3 trillion was stolen by alleged APC leaders as well as the reported N1.1 trillion worth of crude allegedly stolen with 18 unregistered ship belonging to certain APC leaders.
“This is in addition to the reports in the public space of over N3 trillion stolen from various agencies including the Federal Inland Revenue Services, FIRS, National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, the Social Investment Programmes where the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, exposed that N500 billion was siphoned as well as the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA)l, in which a very top APC government official was indicted.
“The APC spokesperson should answer the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, over its recent report that unemployment had escalated to an alarming 33.3 per cent under the corrupt and treasury looting APC administration; a revelation that shows that claims of massive job creation by the deceptive APC are mere statistic hoax.
“Furthermore, the APC mouthpiece should respond to reports by credible international bodies such as Transparency International (TI) that corruption in Nigeria has worsened under the APC, with our nation falling 13 places in the corruption index since 2015 under the watch of their “Mr. Integrity”
“It is clear that the APC is seeking ways to cover the looting of N15 trillion belonging to our nation as Nigerians are clamoring for the investigation of the indicted APC leaders and recovery of the money.”
…says “I didn’t leave PDP, it was PDP that left me”
Hon. Dr. Chukwuemeka Ujam, a member of the 8th National Assembly that represented Nkanu East and West federal constituency has officially joined the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Dr. Ujam joined the ruling party at his country home Boys’ Secondary School Akpasha, Akegbeugwu on Sunday, 21st February, 2021.
The former Lawmaker was ushered into the APC by Chief Senator Ken Nnamani, former Nigerian Senate President who described Dr. Ujam as a man of excellent education and exposure coupled with an intimidating family and social pedigree.
“Your quality education and exposure are well documented. As a big fish that only swims in big water, we, APC, stand to gain what the PDP mistakenly have lost in you.”
Chief Ken Nnamani enjoined him to bring his wealth of experience in politics to bare in his new political expedition with APC.
Speaking at the event, the APC Chairman Enugu State, Dr Ben Nwoye, expressed happiness over the progress of APC in Enugu state under his watch, especially by “successfully wooing and enlisting PDP’s finest brains such as Emeka Ujam.”
He thanked the party Stalwarts and faithfuls that graced the occasion for their unwavering faith and support to the APC.
In his acceptance speech, Hon. Dr. Chukwuemeka Ujam, disclosed that his decision to join APC was not an easy one as it involved a wide range of meetings and consultations with friends, superiors and political allies across the length and breadth of the country.
He further stated, that: “I did not leave the PDP, it was the PDP that left me” and promised to bring his political expertise to bare in his new party. He thanked all that graced the occasion, including his boss, though not in attendance – The former Governor of Enugu state, His Excellency, Barrister Sullivan Chime.
The registration of Dr. Ujam was witnessed by the Enugu State APC Registration and Revalidation Committee from Abuja which is chaired by Sen. Jonathan Zwingina.

A former Chief of Army Staff, retired Lieutenant General Azubuike Ihejirika, has joined the All Progressives Congress.
The ex-Army Chief formally declared for the APC and registered with the party in the ongoing registration and revalidation on Tuesday.
Recall that General Ihejirika, served at the helm of the Nigerian Army from 2010-2014 under former President Goodluck Jonathan, made his declaration to join the APC at his Isuikwuato country home in Abia North Senatorial District.
The former COAS made his declaration and subsequently registered at Ezere Ward 2.
His registration was conducted by the APC Ward Chairman, Iheanyi Chukwu, in the presence of stalwarts of the party, including Kalu; State Secretary of the party, Perfect Okorie; Deputy State Woman Leader of the party, Lady Franca Osuwa; Chairman, Abia APC Registration panel, Ambassador Bala Mohammed Mairiga; Chief Ameobi Ogah; Dr. Lilian Obenwa; Abia North APC Zonal Chairman, Chief Chris Ajah; Member, Abia State House of Assembly, representing Isuikwuato Constituency, Hon. Emeka Okorofor; and party faithful.
Recall that in November last year, Kalu, the APC leader in Abia State, urged Ihejirika to join the party.
“General Ihejirika’s decision to join us today in the APC is no doubt a great one and I must commend him for taking the bold step after over a year of convincing him to join the party.
“He should be assured that his membership in our party will be a very fruitful one.
“I am loyal to the party.
“This is why I have always subjected myself to the party’s decision-making process.
“My appreciation also goes to the Chairman, Abia APC Registration panel, Ambassador Bala Mohammed Mairiga, and his team for joining me to grace this exercise.
“The chairman can see for himself that the APC in Abia is deeply rooted.
“In the last few days, he has accompanied me to some decamping ceremonies of people from other parties into our party.
“On behalf of our National Chairman, Governor Mai Mala Buni, I welcome you to our great party.”
Disclosing his reasons for joining the party, General Ihejirika said his coming into politics by joining the APC is to contribute to the progress of the party in the state and at the national level.
The former COAS said further that having served in the Army for almost 38 years, he has gathered sufficient experience to contribute to the democracy of the nation and the fortunes of the party.
In his words:” I am delighted by the presence of the leader of the party in our state, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, to honour this event.
“Having served almost 38 years in the military, I am convinced that it will be a waste of experience for me to remain outside government activities.
“Thus is because I have a lot to offer and assure you all that I will operate an open-door policy.
“I will also learn fast.”
Ihejirika said his first goal is to unite the party.
He said: “My first goal is to unite the party.
“Unity is very important because if we are united, we can achieve all our goals for the state and the nation at large.”
Recall that similar advances by Senator Kalu had yielded results as it saw the founder of the All Progressives Grand Alliance and United Peoples Party, Chekwas Okorie; former governorship candidate of the APGA in 2015 and 2019, Dr. Alex Otti; former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Chief Emeka Atuma; former Commissioner for Finance in Abia State, Obinna Oriaku, joining the party in the state.
Former Ogun Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel has joined the ruling party, the All Progressive Congress (APC).
Recall that the former governor served as campaign manager of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in 2019 Abubakar Atiku.
In a statement, Daniel apologised to his former party for the short notice, stating that his support for Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun, was a pointer.
Gbenga Daniel explained that the decision took a speedy curve after a request of the national caretaker Chairman of APC to visit him along with three governors on Wednesday.
He wrote: “Dear friends & colleagues, pardon my short notice in informing you of my route to the APC which as you might have suspected started with my supporting Governor Dapo Abiodun during the last election.
“I have since experienced an avalanche of encouragement to come on board.
“However in the last 48 hours things took a dizzying speed with the decision of the APC National Chairman request to visit me at Asoludero on Wednesday with about three Governors.
“While planning for the visit Governor Abiodun also decided to visit me later today with another set of Governors later today.
“It therefore means that I have finally been ‘captured’ “I thought I should quickly brief the house before the news go viral. Thanks for your understanding”, he wrote.
A chieftain of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), Senator Abubakar Geiri, says the party has zoned the 2023 presidency to the South-South.
Geri, Chairman, APC Registration and Revalidation Panel for Akwa Ibom State, made this known on Sunday during the kick-off of the registration and revalidation exercise in Uyo, the state capital.
According to Geiri, said President Muhammadu Buhari and the Caretaker Chairman of the party, and Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni were aware of the decision.
Geiri, represented by the Secretary of the Panel, Hon. Sheriff Banki, called on the south-south wing of the party particularly the youths and the women to mobilize themselves and register for taking over in the 2023 election.
He said: “In 2023, the presidency is coming back to the South, I am not saying this by myself, I have the authority of Mr President, I have the authority of the national chairman of the party to tell you that the presidency is coming back to the South. So, with this, the ball is now in your court.
“I am sure that very soon all of this mushroom party would also copy us and say their presidency would also come to the South. So, you can see, if you don’t come out en masse to register for APC our candidate may still not win. So, come out and register and vote for APC in all the elections that are coming.
“We are particularly calling on the youths and women to out in en masse and own this party because we have almost done our own, we are on our way out and we want our sons and daughters to come and take over from us.”
He commended the Akwa Ibom state chapter of the party for taking the revalidation seriously by turning up for the exercise en masse.
Geiri said the exercise has witnessed a large turnout in less than four days of its commencement across the country which has also led to the exhaustion of registration documents.
He added that before Wednesday, registration documents would be supplied to all units for people to continue their revalidation.
“You have already shown clearly by coming out in en masse to register, the information that we have is that in less than four days, all the registration centres in all the units have almost all exhausted their registration documents.
“If you go to register and they tell you that the forms have finished, don’t worry, more are coming from now till Wednesday, everybody will have the opportunity to register from his own unit and this the foundation for APC to take over Akwa Ibom come 2023,” he said.
The All Progressives Congress has denied speculations that it was wooing former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2023 Presidential Election on its platform.
There were media reporters last week that a group of Northern Governors were working towards making Jonatan contest the elections to serve a single term of four years after which power will return to the north.
Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, who is also the Interim National Chairman of the APC, denied the report in an interview with the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation monitored in Kaduna on Wednesday.
He said, “Those peddling such information are afraid. But for now, there is nothing in the APC that has anything to do with the aspiration for 2023.
“Even if someone wants to base his assumption on our recent visit to him during his birthday, we were there to pay respects to him in his capacity as a former President of Nigeria.
“Again, even if there is nothing, when we are talking of peaceful coexistence, we must give credit to former President Jonathan on the issue of peace. How he accepted defeat in 2015 and resigned to fate. That has qualified him to be a statesman and he is now among our fathers.”
The APC chairman said it was customary for politicians to visit one another and exchange pleasantries.
“Our visit to Jonathan was pronounced because of his status as a former president. That could be why some may think there was something beneath.
A former member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Mr Obinna Okenwa on Sunday defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Okenwa represented Enugu South Urban in the state assembly from 2015 to 2019 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He declared for the APC with his father, Chief Emma Okenwa, onetime deputy chairman of the PDP in the state. He also did that over 500 of his supporters defected with him.
The former legislator said that he decided to join the new party due to its progressive nature, adding that the PDP had lost touch with reality.
He solicited the support of the APC to enable them to contribute meaningfully to the success of the party in the state and beyond.
“We are joining the APC with our supporters, family members and well-wishers with a promise to make a difference.
“We have the capacity to move things and make them happen. With the support of the leadership of the APC, we shall defend the party with all our strength,” Okenwa said.
In his remarks, the Caretaker Chairman of the party in the state, Mr Ben Nwoye, who received the defectors, said that more people would be joining the APC in the coming days.
Nwoye said that the party was not leaving any stone unturned to form the next government in the state.
He appealed to the people of the state to take their destinies into their hands by identifying with a progressive party.
Also, a former president of the Senate, Chief Ken Nnamani, said that the APC provided the South East with a bigger picture because it currently controlled the Federal Government.
Nnamani said that the time had come for the people of the zone to fully embrace the APC.
The former senate president said that he was gratified by the peace and unity in the state chapter of the party, adding that such would provide the needed push to take over the state.
“The Caretaker Committee has a big work to do in the state as we embark on the revalidation and registration of new members. Our people should obtain their membership cards in the APC,” Nnamani said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that prominent among those that attended the defection rally was the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama and former National Vice President, South East, Chief Emma Enukwu.
NAN reports that the APC on Jan. 25, commenced membership registration, revalidation and upgrade nationwide as part of efforts to strengthen the party in the country.
Ebonyi Governor, David Umahi, has accused some political leaders in the State of causing violence.
He told the new Police Commissioner, Aliyu Garba to tackle insecurity in Ebonyi.
Umahi spoke in Abakaliki, the state capital, on Wednesday when Garba visited him, NAN reports.
“You are coming at a very trying moment and should deal decisively with anyone instigating insecurity. It should be stated that some leaders instigate crises but when it comes to security issues, my party is God and the people,” he said.
Umahi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) accused the past police leadership of hobnobbing with politicians.
“I nearly severed my relationship with the police but was restrained by the integrity of its Inspector General. How can police officers be inside their offices and hoodlums would attack them and collect their guns?” He asked.
The governor said it happened more than three times under the former police boss.
“It is unfortunate. Cultists would be arrested and three or four days later, they are released into the society to further cause problems,” he said.
Umahi disclosed that his administration would soon distribute operational vehicles to security agencies.
Umahi warned new Coordinators of Local Government Development Centres and Special Assistants against disloyalty.
In his remarks, Garba pledged to ensure the protection of the peoples’ lives and property.
