However, there should be an introspection by everyone of you to remember where the rain started to beat the party which led to its unexciting success in 2019 general elections. I am very sure of the facts that all the governorship aspirants are rushing all of you.Have you been lodged in hotels, lobbying and treating you all with special treats, which includes but not limited to Ofe Ogbono? And I dared to ask Awagolu gi oji- have you received your own kolanuts from the aspirants? Have you signed the popular MoU not to support any other aspirants except the last godson of the selfstyled APGA Supremo? Are you scared of losing your political appointments, or your envious position as members of the Exco in your Wards, LGAs, and State level? Are you afraid of the unknown- Egwu eji gi? Be brave! The good news is that, it’s no longer business as usual. Nothing will happen to your jobs, no one will expel you from the party. Believe, the reinvigorated APGA frowns seriously at primordial sentiments, and witch-hunting. Make no mistakes about it, nkea bu nke anyi…not nke otu onye. The solemn reason for this letter is to implore all would be delegates to realize the enormous task before you. Your one vote may be the vote that will retain the APGA in Agu Awka or the one vote that will ruin the party. All the aspirants have their campaign massages and all must have reached out. Let the goal be to elect the most formidable, sellable and most acceptable aspirant by the masses who by all indications can defeat the opposition come November 6, 2021.I understand that during the last general elections, some of you who participated in the primary elections either as delegates or stakeholders went home with thousands, and millions of naira in your pockets. I quite well understand that the depth of one’s pocket can easily secure him the ticket to be a party flag bearer, but what’s the wisdom of being rich for one day and spending the next four years in poverty and regrets?Dear party faithful, stakeholders, delegates and national working committee, your decision will determine how well the next four years would be. Today, you are the most sought after people by politicians, but have you asked yourself if you would be sought after the primaries, and main election.Forgive me for coming hard on you, but the candidate you will give ndi Anambra will not only bear our fate but yours as well. Before you pitch tent with any gubernatorial aspirant, please ask yourself what your candidate will do for ndi Anambra; will he be better than the incumbent Governor Willie Obiano? Will he continue his good works, complete ongoing projects or abandon them for white elephant projects? Will he sustain the successes recorded by Governor Obiano, in quality health care, education, security, human capacity developments, jobs creation, infrastructural developments, workers welfare, will he pay them as at when due? What will his policies be like? Will they favor the common man on the streets or just the elites? Will he turn his back at both you and Akpokuedike? Will he start witch-hunting Chief Willie Obiano and his lieutenants? Will he become intoxicated with power and start chasing our illustrious sons out of the state? Will he become a tyrant, unapproachable, stubborn, stingy, “chop alone”,selfish, wicked, arrogant, demigod and “Eze onye agwana mu”? Will he be running after big-nyash, and ara umuaka anyi, as governance suffers?Dear APGA faithful, I implore you not to sell your conscience for any kind of gratification which is not good governance, but if you must, do not collect peanuts. Remember, an aspirant who pays you at the primary election won’t be accountable to anyone because he has settled you, he paid for your support, and doesn’t owe you anything, going forward. Let’s rally round a candidate who will build the Anambra of our dream. Let’s throw our weight on the credible candidate, let’s give our support to the real man. One who has no godfather, one who has no political baggages, one who will unite our party, bring all the aggrieved members back to the fold. Let’s support the peacemaker, not a troublemaker, not a pompous, arrogant and selfish politician. Don’t be deceived into believing there buckets of lies else you will be disappointed at the last minute. From the standpoint of the APGA grassroots activists, critical stakeholders, and faith based organizations who had scrutinised the activities of Nze Akachukwu Nwankpo in comparison to the other governorship aspirants in Anambra and have found out that we need a man, that is straightforward, honest, industrious, energetic, knowledgeable, intelligent, proactive, visionary, courageous, tested, trusted, reliable, and credible to add value to Anambra State and re-engineer the creative and entrepreneurial skills of our people at this auspicious moment of back-to-land.A good governance compliant, Nwankpo, will ensure all the elements of good and creative governance will be used to enhance and unleash growth and development opportunities on Anambra State. Nze Akachukwu Nwankpo is electable and unimpeachable with a rich and robust socio-cultural background, charismatic and influential God-Given Skills, added to a highly developed human and interpersonal skills required for attracting people of value to make the business of development smooth sailing. My dear Honorable National Working Committee of the APGA. I will as a matter of fact implore the APGA NWC to as a matter of fact ensure the primary election is free, credible and provision of a smooth level playing ground for all the aspirants. It may interest you to know that any election that is not free and fair risks negativity in compromising party loyalists, stakeholders and supporters and it encourages sparking further conflict.EkenemDr. Harris Chuma-Odili FCMsp

Anambra Airport: From Rumour to Reality

By James EzeStanding on the tenth floor of the Control Tower of the Anambra International Airport, Umueri two days ago, I felt a tremor ripple through me. Six months earlier, the spot where the tower stands was a wrinkled patch of earth. Now upon it stands a towering monument to the resilience of a proud and enterprising people. It suddenly dawned on me that sometimes; the thin line between dream and reality is fear…fear of failure, fear of uncertainty, fear of being caught on the wrong side of history. And beyond this overcast of fear, success waits in silvery brightness. It is heartwarming to think that Governor Willie Obiano did not give in to fear…that he kept his eyes on the prize and that on account of that, a monument is sprouting out of the soil of Umueri today in his name. In fact, if Obiano had given in to fear, the airport project would have assumed all the attributes of a malaria dream; indistinct, unrealistic and finally…vaporous. But today, Anambra International Airport has moved from rumour to reality. And as we mark Obiano’s 7th Anniversary, we pay a modest tribute to the resolve of purposeful leadership to break free of mediocrity. In clearer terms, Willie Obiano is currently completing one of the most modern airports in Africa. At 3.7 kilometers long and 60 meter wide, the Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport, Umueri has the second longest runway in Nigeria, next to only Muritala Muhammad International Airport Lagos. But since it was designed and built to enable landing from either side, the runway has a slight edge over Lagos. It is a CAT 2 type of runway with a ground lighting of 270mm.The airport terminal is designed to accommodate 400 persons. It has three floors fitted with escalators and lifts for smooth and easy movement. It was designed with the possibilities of a future expansion in mind. The Apron measures 300x200m x560mm of reinforced concrete that can take six sizeable aircraft at once. The Apron is serviced by two standard Taxiways that measure 35m wide with shoulders. It also has three ultramodern firefighting trucks and three 6×6 Crash-tender with 770hp. The car park can comfortably take 400 cars. The outstanding thing about the airport is that it will be equipped with an Instrument Landing System (ILS) which will guarantee a safe landing for airplanes at night. Impressive! The most interesting thing to note about this airport is that it is almost ready barely one year after construction commenced on the site. Work began on the site in January 2020 but the world soon slid into a dark tunnel when COVID-19 struck. Doubts rose over it like the pungent smell of a cheap Arabian perfume as folks wondered how the dream would survive the global shutdown. But it did. Work went on at the site; day and night, all through the shutdown and the recrudescence of the pandemic early this year. Work is still progressing at a blistering pace. The basic structures are all set. The central access road to the airport which leads to Enugu-Onitsha Expressway has a bridge and a big culvert which have both been constructed. Sooner than later the road will be completed.Interestingly, against the expectations of some critics, Governor Obiano chose to mark his 7th Anniversary in absolute solemnity even when he has so much to celebrate for. However, when the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo paid him an unsolicited visit, Obiano decided to take them to the airport construction site to acquaint them with the progress of work. Needless to say, led by Prof George Udozor, the members of Ohanze were thoroughly impressed with what they saw. They said so in unmistakable terms. Speaking his mind about the airport, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, owner of the defunct Oriental Airlines said “I have been hearing about the airport; but there is a difference between what you hear and what you see. Today, I have seen the airport and I am impressed. As most of you know, I am an engineer. I specialized in highway and hydraulics. I built the Enugu Airport as a very young engineer. I want to say that what Governor Obiano is building here is not for Anambra State but for the entire South East. This is very important.” Chief Iwuanyanwu should know. After all, he was also deeply involved in the building of the Owerri Airport. The most fascinating thing about the Anambra airport is not just that it is set to blaze a new trail in Nigerian aviation but that it is one airport whose viability is guaranteed even before it starts operations. There is hardly another state in Nigeria that has Anambra’s large number of restless, always-on-their-feet population. These people love convenience. They would rather fly to Umueri than any of the nearby airports. Anambra is the leading economic hub in the South East with 63 active markets and the largest retail market in West Africa located just a few kilometers to the airport. The cargo wing of the airport will meet their needs perfectly. Similarly, at the moment, the leading airline in Nigeria; Airpeace is owned by onye Anambra. He already has place reserved for his airline at the airport. Lately, two other entrepreneurs from the state have also floated new airlines. They are Dr Obiora Okonkwo of United Airlines and Chief Chidi Anyaegbu, CEO of Chisco Group who floated Havila Airlines a few days ago. These airlines are sure to open offices at the Anambra airport. The National Bureau of Statistics also announced that Anambra is the state with the least poverty rate in Nigeria at 15%. This means that many people from the state can afford the slightly steep cost of air travels.Sincerely, it is difficult not to see that once again, Governor Willie Obiano has shown incredible vision with the Anambra Airport initiative. It is impossible not to accept, even if reluctantly, that things are indeed falling together for Anambra State, under Willie Obiano.

Anambra Govt Vows To Arrest, Prosecute Naked Miracle Bathing Prophet Onyeze For Alleged Fraud

Anambra State Government is poised to prosecute a fake miracle peddler, ‘Onyeze Jesus‘ of Nkpor, for suspected fraud.

Information Commissioner, C. Don Adinuba, said there are complaints that the pastor uses magic and fake miracles to swindle followers. Government according to him, is investigating the alleged victims’ claims and will prosecute the Nkpor pastor if these are verified, he said.

In viral videos streaming online, the pastor gathers followers in a stream where they are made to take a naked bath in the river. He moves round them spraying the river with various currency notes while he video records the ritual.

The recordings are thereafter gleefully shared online to recruit more gullible followers.
Adinuba said government is “appalled” at his conduct which,”has brought Anambra State into global ridicule.”

“We received reports from former disciples that Onyeze Jesus swindled them of their hard earned resources. All the promises and assurances of turning them into overnight millionaires have proved to be fraudulent. The state Government is looking into the claims. If we find merit in the claims, he will be prosecuted in accordance with the law,” Adinuba said.

Here is the full statement, released today, 25 January 2021, by the Commissioner:

“The Anambra State Government is in possession of some videos produced by one person who goes by the name of Onyeze Jesus based in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state, where he not only claims to change the economic status of his adherents by magical means but also throws a lot of Nigeria’s currency notes into the river and compels his adult followers, both male and female, to bath naked in the river and records them on video which he distributes gleefully to all manner of people through the Internet and other means.

“The State Government is appalled at the conduct of this man. Anambra people are famous throughout the world for their industry, knowledge, ingenuity, perseverance, a high savings rate and an infectious business drive, all combined to enable them to achieve tremendous success in various fields. Their success is not overnight nor through magic.

“Onyeze Jesus promotes superstition and strife in society. By telling his gullible and brainwashed followers that their misfortune is caused by family members, relatives, friends and business associates through magical powers, he is fomenting serious troubles and instigating eternal enmity in various places and businesses. Some of these troubles can lead to physical fights, bodily injuries and even deaths.

“By throwing plenty of naira notes into the river regularly as part of sacrifice to the river goddess and filming it and distributing the film to the whole world, he has brought Anambra State into global ridicule and, worse, gregariously committed a criminal offence. Burning or destroying the naira through any means is an offence criminalized by the Central Bank of Nigeria Act of 2007, and the offender is liable to imprisonment.

“By forcing his disciples to have a bath naked in a river, then film the naked adults and distribute the videos across the globe, Onyeze Jesus is guilty of denying his followers the right to self-dignity and of promoting indecent exposure, which is a crime under the Nigerian law.

“We have received reports from former disciples that Onyeze Jesus has swindled them of their hard earned resources, that is, all the promises and assurances of turning them into overnight millionaires have proved to be fraudulent. The state Government is looking into the claims. If we find merit in the claims, he will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

“The people and Government of Anambra State are irrevocably committed to fundamental rights of freedom of worship and freedom of association as well as freedom of conscience. However, observing these freedoms should not lead to a situation where heinous crimes will be carried out with impunity, whether in the name of religion or not.

“Anambra State is a modern society governed by the rule of law, civilized values and proper conduct. The government will not stand akimbo watching while an individual or a handful of individuals flagrantly abuse its values and flout its laws.

“We wish to thank numerous individuals and organizations alarmed at the conduct and claims of Onyeze Jesus and his cohorts and complained accordingly to the appropriate authorities. We assure them and millions of our people that an appropriate action is being taken.”

18 Anambra children unclaimed two years after rescue –Police

The Anambra State Police Command, on Wednesday, said no fewer than 18 children it rescued from traffickers remained unclaimed two years after.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement in Awka.

He said the command had arrested four women allegedly involved in the trafficking of the children.

Mohammed stated, “It will be recalled that on October 22, 2019, following an intelligence report, police operatives attached to the Anambra State Police Command arrested three female suspects at the Nkpor Market/Tarzan junction in the Idemili North LGA of Anambra State with three children suspected to have been stolen.

“Investigations revealed that the children were stolen from Gombe State by one Hauwa Usman on the October 20, 2019 and brought to her accomplices in Anambra State.

“Following the public announcement by the command on October 27, 2019, the parents of two of the kids from Gombe State came to Awka and identified their children.

“The children have since been reunited with their parents and the suspects were handed over to the Gombe State Police Command for discreet investigation and prosecution.”

He added, “Upon interrogation by the police in Gombe State, the suspects voluntarily confessed that they usually steal the children and bring them to their sponsor, one Mrs Nkechi Odinye, here in Anambra State, who buys each child at the rate of between N200,000 and N400,000, depending on their age and gender.

“Following voluntary confession by the suspects and while acting on a tip-off, police detectives attached to the 3-3 Division, in Collaboration with operatives attached to the command’s Special Anti-Cult Section, stormed the hideout of the principal suspect, one Mrs Nkechi Odinye, aged 55, and effected her arrest at Obosi in the Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

“The suspect had hitherto evaded arrest for over three years by changing locations until her arrest.

“The team equally recovered from her custody 16 other children of various age brackets, comprising 10 boys and six girls, reasonably suspected to have been stolen from different parts of the country.

“Both the suspect and the found children were handed over to the Gombe State Police Command; four of the children were identified and reunited with their biological parents after exhaustive investigation and forensic analysis, including DNA tests. Also, one of them was handed over to the parents in Asaba, Delta State.

“However, on January 18, 2021, the Gombe State Police Command returned 11 unclaimed children, comprising seven boys and four girls, to Anambra State, where the children were originally found.

“They were subsequently handed over to the Anambra State Ministry for Social Welfare, Women and Children’s Affairs for safe keeping until their biological parents emerge.

“Meanwhile, the command now has a total of 18 unclaimed children rescued from suspected child traffickers.”

While urging members of the public to disseminate the message to enable the parents and close relatives of the children to come out, identify and collect them, Mohammed appealed to anyone with useful information about the kids to report at the Area Command, Onitsha; the 3-3 Divisional Police Station, Nkwelle Ezunaka, or contact the PPRO, Anambra State Police Command.

Obiano Reassures Of Support To Security Agencies

Governor Willie Obiano has called on the citizenry to always support security personnel to encourage them to be more committed to the job of securing life and property.

Governor Obiano made the call in Awka, during a state function to honour and support both serving and retired members of the Armed Forces, who devoted their active years to the service of their nation.

The governor, who spoke through his Deputy, Dr. Nkem Okeke reminded the people that the security agents make lots of sacrifices to ensure safety for all, hence the need to support them when necessary.

He commended serving and retired security agents in the state for all their efforts in safeguarding the state, and assured continued support for them.

#EndSARS: Lecturer narrates ordeal in detention as Anambra judicial panel receives 114 petitions

The State Panel of Enquiry on Police Brutality, Extra-Judicial Killings and Other Related Matters yesterday announced that petitions from victims of the recently disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) have increased to 114.

Anambra is noted to be one of the states with the highest number of SARS brutality, torture and extrajudicial killings in the country, with the police unit’s Awkuzu headquarters officially code-named ‘hellfire’.

Chairman of the panel in Anambra, Justice Veronica Umeh (Rtd) announced during the panel’s sitting yesterday at the Anambra State government house that more petitions were coming in, and that so far, 114 petitions had been received.

She said, “We have started in earnest. We have 114 petitions so far. We dismissed some the other day and treated some too. We have a total of 114 now, and from Thursday, we will announce a new sitting arrangement, and we want you all to bear with us.

“From next week, we will produce a tag for all members of the panel, so that it would be easy for us to know who is who. I urge you all to submit your passports. Journalists are also expected to clearly display their press tags very clearly, so we know those who are here.”

Meanwhile, the panel entertained some petitions, including testimonies from a lecturer with the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Dr Justin Nwankwo who said the defunct SARS operatives ruptured his scrotum in the process of torturing him in 2013.

He also asked for compensation for properties confiscated by men of the SARS from his room during his ordeal, and compensation for unjustly branding him a kidnapper and human parts dealer.

He told journalists that, “The incident happened in 2013. I was the manager of the Upper Class Hotel in Onitsha, and I was also a PhD student then. We had rented out one of our rooms to a guest, who was properly checked in.

“In the morning, policemen came and searched the hotel and discovered some skulls in room 102, and the guest to whom we rented the room was not there. We told them that we duly recorded the guest before check-in, and that same morning, we had taken our manifest of all people who were guests to the CID department as was the practice, but they refused to listen.

“We urged them to investigate the guest as only he could tell how the skulls got there, but they were more interested in parading us as kidnappers and human parts dealers. I was brutally tortured and had a near-death experience for 81 days in SARS office Awkuzu, and I almost died.

“We (staff of Upper Class Hotel) were detained, tortured and released without any charge. I sustained damaged testicles, and ruptured scrotum, with lots of bodily harm. I am seeking compensation for the demolition of the hotel and for my name to be cleared, and my properties paid for.”

He regretted that immediately after they were arrested, no investigation was carried out, nor any panel set, but the then state governor, Mr Peter Obi ordered the demolition of the hotel on the same day.

“The police knew that no one was missing in that room, the man who rented the room had a name and the manifest was submitted to the police. The person who brought the skull is the person who should be investigated.

“Under one day, there was an executive, a judiciary and all investigation carried out in one day and the hotel was demolished, all in one day. Peter Obi was hasty (with the demolition) but said he had information, and never made such information known.

“We were paraded to the world as people selling human parts and taken for torture. That to me as a PhD student then was enough blacklisting. They know you cannot as hotel management ask to search the bag of guests. Our instinct is clear and we know that it was a plant. The hotel owner (Mr Bonaventure Mokwe) was set up by his adversaries and we (staff) were caught in the web,” he said.

Anambra police command resumes patrols across state

Anambra State Police command has resumed its regular security patrols and check points across the state in a bid to deter criminals.

The resumption of the security patrols and check points was necessitated due to the shutdown of the security posts during the October #ENDSARS protests Nationwide.

The move by the state police command also seeks to gain on-the-spot assessment of the various flash points in the state, police check points, patrol teams and security posts to ascertain the level of damage done and the normalcy restored, and also to get information on level of crimes committed during the absence of the police in order to strategize on more ways of securing lives and property of the state’s residents .

Mr. Abang who spoke through the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Haruna Mohammed revealed that the state police personnel have been sensitized and briefed on police Public relations while the welfare of the members of the command is being taken care of by the federal government.

Senator Ngige inspects property destroyed during #EndSARS violence in Anambra, asks states to compile list of damaged facilities

Nigeria’s Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige has said that the Federal Government will support Anambra State in rebuilding facilities destroyed during the #EndSARS protests that recently rocked the country.

Senator Ngige stated this when he made an on-the-spot assessment of the damage done to facilities in different parts of Anambra State.

Senator Ngige, a former Governor of Anambra State toured the facilities in company of the Secretary to the Government of Anambra State, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu and other government officials.

The property visited by the minister included Anambra State Internal Revenue Service, Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade office, Central Police Command, Ogidi, Divisional Police Headquarters, also in Ogidi, Divisional Police Headquarters, Nnobi and Nnewi Central Police Station and barracks as well as the Area Command Headquarters, Nnewi.

Note that Governor Willie Obiano had visited the facilities days ago, where he promised that immediate re-construction would soon commence.

The #EndSARS protests had began peacefully in Anambra State as with others states in the federation, with Governor Obiano once addressing the protesters, making crucial promises to ensure that police officers who perpetuated crimes in the state are expeditely brought to book.

However, at the tail end of the social agitation, hoodlums capitalized on the volatility of the period and the conspicuous absence of security officials to unleash crimes including torching government property and looting anything their hands could reach.

Anambra Govt declares 24-hour curfew as hoodlums burn police station, one killed

There is tension in Nnewi, Anambra State following the razing of the Central Police Station in the area by hoodlums.

One person was allegedly feared dead during the incident, which occurred around 11pm on Wednesday.

The situation led to the closure of Schools, Markets, Banks and all other offices in the industrial city.

Our correspondent gathered the hoodlums, who broke the cell to free detainees after burning down the CPS office, proceeded to the Police Area Command but were repelled by officers on duty.

#ENDSARS protesters, as early as 6:00am on Thursday, filled the streets, making fire with tires and other inflammable objects at the popular Nkwo Nnewi roundabout and other major streets.

Some were also seen milling up and down with motorcycles.

One of the protesters said they were not happy with police officers in the town because of the activities of Anti-cult unit housed also at CPS.

A medical doctor at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), who preferred anonimity said he saw a lifeless body in front of the burnt CPS.

“They burnt down CPS and another Police Station last night. They zoomed through the hospital gate this morning. Burn fires everywhere, roads are being closed. A corpse already lying in front of the burnt CPS,” he said.

Police spokesperson, SP Haruna Mohammed could not be reached as at press time as his phone was switched off.

Meanwhile, Governor Obiano declares 24 hour curfew, starting from 8pm today. All Schools and Markets closed. All social gathering at 8pm closed.
