The Presidency has denied that the crash of Dana Airline Flight 992 from Abuja to Lagos was as a result of VIP movement that kept the aircraft in the air longer than necessary.
The VIP for whom the landing of the aircraft was said to have been delayed is the wife of President Goodluck Jonathan and First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.
But in a statement on Tuesday evening, the Presidency denied such movement.
It said Dame Patience Jonathan never intended travelling on that Sunday and did not travel.
The statement, signed by Ayo Osinlu, the Special Assistant to the President, Office of the First Lady, reads: “Our attention has been drawn to the orchestrated plan to politicise the Sunday Dana Air crash in Lagos in which many people lost their lives, through rumours about the possible cause of the accident citing VIP movement involving the wife of the President.
“We consider it callous, inhuman and devilish for anyone to have thought of wrapping such national calamity in political garb by insinuating that the plane crashed because the airspace was closed for the First Lady’s movement in Lagos.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the First Lady arrived Lagos at about 2pm on Saturday, 2nd June, 2012 for a private engagement and was billed to leave for Abuja on Monday, 4th June, 2012.
“In compliance with her itinerary, the First Lady arrived Lagos on Saturday. She was at a public event on Sunday when the accident occurred and promptly abandoned the ceremony as a mark of respect for the victims and retired to the State House, Marina. She left Lagos at exactly 13.15hrs on Monday, 4th June, 2012, according to schedule.
“It is therefore surprising that some mischievous persons will see this moment of National mourning as an opportunity to blackmail and impugn the First Lady’s integrity.
“This is the time for all Nigerians to be sober and pray for the repose of the souls of the victims and not a time to subordinate the interests of our nation to narrow self-serving interests.
“Let us all put the interest of the Nation first in whatever we do.
“Mrs. Jonathan had no intention to travel on Sunday and never did. Like all Nigerians, she has been mourning the dead.”

The management of the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency has allayed fears of stakeholders in the outdoor advertising industry over the sudden collapse of the iconic structure situated along the Adekunle interchange of the Third Mainland Bridge.
The Agency said the failed structure was being developed by Media 2 Limited, an outdoor advertising practitioner.
Speaking after the collapse, the Managing Director of the agency, Mr. George Noah, said: “The structure, which was at its finishing stage, caved in and investigation is being conducted to ascertain the development.”
Noah said a similar structure was however constructed about 50 metres away from the collapsed billboard last year.
The structure also houses the same LED technology.
Speaking further, Noah said: “In an industry such as this where innovation is emerging, engineering processes and procedures require higher intelligence and safety.
“We will use this to raise the bar henceforth.
“We want to assure members of the public particularly advertisers and the outdoor advertising industry that we will continue to implement stringent measures, procedures and standards to avert future collapse.
“We are working closely with the Lagos State Safety Commission for the certification of billboard designs and structures to make them fit and proper for the general public.”

TB Joshua in this video, had told Nigerians flying local airlines in the country to be very prayerful while boarding any flight as, according to him, God has shown him an imminent plane crash.
Prophet Joshua said the crash will not be caused by technical fault but by a security breach.
In his words: “The plane crash, if not averted, will involve one of, Nigeria’s local flights. I wish to therefore advise Nigerians to pray zealously so that the country will not experience such a disaster, which might claim the lives of many government officials.
As part of measures to avoid being a victim of the crash, people who want to travel by air should always recite Psalm 91 before boarding
any aircraft in order to ensure safe land.
An Emirati man who tortured his eight-year-old daughter to death urged court to sentence him to death, saying he was very sorry for what he had done and wanted to commit a suicide, a newspaper reported on Monday.
Hamad Saud, 27, acknowledged he and his girl friend had beaten up and tortured his daughter, Wadima, but that he had not expected her to die. He said he got a big shock when he found that the girl was dead.
“I tried many times to wake her up but she was not moving…I woke up her younger sister Mira and started to scream many times…I was screaming unconsciously ‘Wadima is dead….Wadima is dead….’…,” he said in a telephone interview from jail with Dubai-based Emirat Alyoum Arabic language daily.
“I was in a state of shock…I wanted to call the police but I could not…I wanted to leave my daughter in the apartment but my partner said we have to bury her because there will be stench by time and the body will be discovered…we then went to that area and buried her…I regretted what I have done and could not stop weeping at her grave…I then went into a state of depression and thought many times of committing a suicide….I just want to be executed as soon as possible so I will get rid of my daily suffering.”
Reacting to the crime, Hamad’s father has demanded the execution of his son for murdering Wadima by systematic beating and torture with a hot iron.
The father said he and all his family have disowned Hamad for murdering his daughter with the assistance of his girl friend under the influence of alcohol and drugs before shaving her head off and burying her in the desert.
“It is a heinous crime…..they tortured my granddaughter with a hot iron and forced her to eat her own waste and discharge….they had also beaten her up regularly before death…..we can not forgive him and insist on his execution and the death of his girl friend who helped him in this ugly crime,” he told the Dubai-based Emirat Alyoum Arabic language daily.
