Champagne-Drinking Governor: Adeyemi Must Apologise -Prof Ibe

The Senator representing Kogi West in the National Assembly Chief Smart Adeyemi has been advised to tender an unreserved apology to the Governor and people of Abia state, “for making unsavory statements likely to malign the person and office of Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, while disparaging the enterprising and industrious people of God’s own State”.

Chancellor of Gregory University Uturu, Prof Gregory Ibe gave this charge while reacting to an online news publication that reported a statement credited to Senator Adeyemi, in which he allegedly referred to the Governor of Abia state as a ‘champagne drinking Governor’ and also erroneously asserted that ‘Abia is governed by drunkards’.
According to Prof Ibe,” I have read with utter dismay comments credited to Chief Smart Adeyemi, who while contributing to discussions on the hallowed chambers of Nigeria’s senate, cast aspersions on my Governor Dr Okezie Ikpeazu by labelling him a champagne drinking Governor and added pepper to injury by describing my Abia as a state governed by drunkards.

While taking exceptions to these wild, frivolous and obviously libellous remarks, I think it smacks of nothing but juvenile delinquency by a misguided adult for Senator Adeyemi to attempt to convert Nigeria’s highest legislative chamber into a road side shack where unrelated and uncoordinated old ladies gossip will be accepted as legal tender for yet another plate of peppersoup”.

Speaking further Prof Ibe wondered how a one time national President of Nigeria Union of Journalists could exhibit disorientation, obtuseness, balminess and feeblemindedness in the face of a very serious matter of urgent national importance, enjoining the leadership of the Senate to restore the confidence of the people on the parliament by appropriately reprimanding the erring member.

In his words,”Being a private citizen I do the impetus to hold brief for the government of Abia state, however I am aware of the level of public-private collaboration in God’s own State that has manifested in the soaring fortune of business and enterprise, which recently gave rise to the emergence of our state as the third destination of choice for direct foreign investment in Nigeria. A state governed by drunkards cannot achieve this feat. I am surprised that a man who has been one time national President of Nigeria Union of Journalists before becoming a ranking senator can manifest such high level of disorientation, obtuseness, balminess and feeblemindedness, especially when crucial issues are being debated. Unfortunately, such shameful brazen act of public disgrace lack the capacity to undo the amount of hard work performed by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu in particular and other Abia faithfuls in general, which continue to draw the likes of Senator Adeyemi to our Abia born artisans, who have the God-given task of dressing them up in our ‘made in Abia’ senator suits, belts and shoes, like the set he wore on the day of his despicable charade.

Subsequently, while urging the leadership of the Senate to restore our confidence in the quality of debates on the floor of the parliament, I want to call on Chief Smart Adeyemi to save his face by tendering unreserved apology to our Governor and the good people of Abia state, for making those unwise, unguarded and unwarranted comments, in order to douse the high tension currently being generated by the matter”, he concluded.

PFN Condemns Marginalization Of Christians In Federal Appointments

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has condemned in strong terms the glaring marginalization of Christians in appointments into federal government offices by the Buhari-led government.

National president of the fellowship, Rev. Dr. Felix Omobude who disclosed this in a statement in Benin City, stated that the government actions could further negativity affect the unity of the country.

He noted that Nigeria has never been as divided the way it is now under the present administration.

Dr. Omobude, stated that the PFN was most saddened with the on-going appointment exercise in the judiciary where only adherents of a particular religion are favoured for appointment as Court of Appeal Justices at the expense of merit and equity.

The PFN leader expressed displeasure that over the years, some Nigerian politicians and top government functionaries have hijacked religion to continue to fester their desires to pursue their selfish ambition.

According to Dr. Omobude, “PFN is deeply saddened that out of 13 nominees from the Northern part of the country for elevation to the Court of Appeal, not a single Christian is among them.

“This unacceptable situation has further buttressed the fact that the nation’s judicial system has been hijacked, politicized and an object of ridicule.

“This is one of the reasons why some Nigerians are fast losing confidence in the nation’s judicial process.

“The PFN hereby calls on President Muhammadu Buhari and all those concerned in the appointment of Justices to the nation’s Court of Appeal, to revisit the issue and ensure that fairness and justice are done irrespective of religious and ethnic background.

“The PFN will not continue to bemoan such brazen acts of provocation and unfairness, as the Fellowship will henceforth take all necessary lawful steps to defend and protect the interests of its marginalized members.

“PFN has always called for justice, fairness and equity in all governmental activities because to subvert a man of his rights on the basis of his religion is corruption.

“PFN once again, calls on president Mohammadu Buhari to stand by his promise that he is for every Nigerian because the country belong to all Nigerians.

“PFN also therefore called on President Buhari to quickly call on whosoever is concerned to correct the imbalance in the on-going appointment to the Court of Appeal and every other areas of government where imbalance exist” Dr. Omobode added.

Emeka Kalu calls for probe of Akpabio, Okon Akwa over N22billion NDDC funds, N100m bribe

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Engineer Emeka Kalu has called for a thorough investigation of alleged squandering of a whopping N22 billion by Senator Godswill Akpabio, who is the Minister for Niger Delta Affairs, and the Sole Administrator of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Effiong Okon Akwa.

Kalu also expressed support for the ongoing investigation of allegation of attempting to bribe some officials of the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB by Akpabio.

Kalu in a statement he signed himself, and made available to Jungle Journalist Media Limited via electronic mail, said that the current corruption charges against Akpabio are one too many, and must not be ignored.

Kalu who sent the mail from the United States of America, warned that the Minister and the Sole Administrator of NDDC, Okon Akwa must not be allowed to get away with the alleged massive fraud which he said has further impoverished people of the Niger Delta.

Hear him: “We are appalled at the high level of corruption cases against Misters Akpabio and Okon Akwa, who heads the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, and the NDDC. What’s really tragic in the whole matter is that the funds being squandered have been allocated for the upliftment of the people of Niger Delta.

“But these two men sit on our money and dare us. I hereby call for a thorough investigation of these men, whom it has become obvious are far from being honest. Pregnancy cannot be hidden forever, and anyone whose hands are not clean should be tried and jailed for corruption.

“I hereby call on the present administration not to relent in its efforts to curb corrupt practices in this country, and to ensure that justice is served against those who have committed fraud on behalf of the people of the Niger Delta, as well As Nigerians across the globe”, he stated in parts.

Recall that a Federal Commissioner in CCB, Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma on Monday, 22nd February 2021 told newsmen that his subcommittee is currently investigating the allegation of N100 million bribe against Akpabio.

According to media reports, Akapabio allegedly offered bribe to the CCB officials to give a “soft landing” to Sole Administrator of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr Efiong Okon Akwa over discrepancies in his asset declaration form.

Agbonayinma said the Bureau was looking at the accusation first made against Mr Akpabio by Jackson Ude on Twitter.

“We have been given a mandate by the bureau to investigate the allegation against some officials of CCB that we saw on social media. Let me be specific, one Mr Jackson Ude twitted, and it went viral, that money was given to some officials of CCB by Akpabio. Because of that, a committee to investigate the allegation was set up, with myself as the chairman,” he said.

The embattled Minister, Godswill Akpabio and Effiong Okon Akwa (Sole Administrator of NDDC) were recently accused of having squandered N22billion released to the agency by the Federal Government.

It was also alleged that the Minister is building a multibillion naira mansion in Abuja, and would soon take delivery of two private jets bought on his behalf by a front, one Dubem Obaze.

‘Focus on security, don’t distract Edo people with storm water project probe you were part and parcel of’, Eholor replies Governor Obaseki

Foremost social rights defender and humanitarian, Patriot Patrick Eholor has asked Governor Godwin Obaseki to stop trying to distract Edo people with what he termed a ‘frivolous probe of the N30 billion storm water project of ex governor Adams Oshiomhole.

Eholor was reacting to news reports of Obaseki threading to institute a probe against the former governor. The activist and Democracy Observer-General said Obaseki was not serious about the claim to probe Oshiomhole, as he was a principal player of that administration and must probe himself too, if he really meant it.

Governor Godwin Obaseki had on Monday, 22nd February 2021, inspected the Textile Mill Road catchment of the over N30bn Benin stormwater project, which he said his administration would probe to recover all the money stolen through it.

Commenting through his personal Twitter handle, Obaseki, while inspecting the area, lamented the poor construction work done by the Adams Oshiomhole administration.
According to him, “there is no way water can be drained from a low land into a higher ground. We say we have experts and paid over N30bn for this project”, he said, and recalled that “the original stormwater project, which was conceived by the previous administration “was designed not to work for the benefit of Edo people, but it was a contract to defraud the state.”

But reacting to the statement credited to the governor, Eholor said the governor cannot be serious, since he was a part of the Oshiomhole administration, and as a matter of fact, played a major role of serving as Oshiomhole’s Economic Adviser.

Alleging that Obaseki’s plans were to institute a kangaroo probe in order to distract the people of Edo State, the humans rights defender wondered why Mr Obaseki appealed his own(Eholor’s) lawsuit against the state during the last administration. He also wondered why the governor also appealed another recent case he(Eholor) won against the government. He therefore asked the governor to focus on governance, especially the porous security of the state, instead of trying to distract the people through an insincere move to probe a project allegedly used to dupe he state that he was part of.

His words “I was surprised and shocked to hear the governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki say that he is going to probe the previous administration over the storm water project.

“Has Mr Governor forgotten so soon that I had instituted a case against the former governor, Adams Oshiomhole, himself and Clement Agba? And he went to court appealing the case, after I won them in court? So what is he now trying to prove?
Is he trying to distract us, so that we don’t talk about the park he said he is going to build? So that we don’t talk about Gelegele? So that we don’t talk about Central Hospital? So what is he really trying to prove?

“Don’t also forget that I took him to court to explain to Edo State State people about the capital flight, why he was taking our juicy jobs away to contractors in Lagos and Bayelsa, which he has not explained. So, if he is going to talk about this, then he must include himself in this probe, because you can never be a judge in your own court.

“Don’t also forget that even the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) that they did with the Edo University, Iyamho, he was also part of it. Everything that Oshiomhole did within his administration, Governor Obaseki also has to explain to us. They also have to probe him, and tell us the roles he played in all, as the Economic Adviser of Oshiomhole’s administration. We don’t want to turn this thing to a Rochas and Uzodimma affair, because if the two elephants fight, it’s the grass that suffer it.

“We are not supporting any corruption, but we are not also going to be supporting any witch hunting. You cannot dispose of a godfather and now become the new godfather. So, this can never happen in our state again, we have grown beyond that. So whenever anybody wants to talk in our state again, you use your foot soldiers to be threatening people and fighting people, giving somebody taxes that don’t exist, and trying to prove that you are an emperor, or that you are a god. You are not God.

“I am not here to support Adams Oshiomhole, or to support APC. but am here to make sure that we do things in the right way, so if anything I say or do today is wrong, I think Obaseki has to prove me or take me to court, because I remain, and I speak on behalf of One Love Foundation, and I speak on behalf of Edo people.

“It has also been said in the past Obaseki has not invested in security in Edo State. That’s why we have a lot of killings, a lot of kidnappings, a lot of herdsmen. I think he should focus on how to combat crime and deal with herdsmen, than distracting us again. So, we are tired of distractions.

“He should tell us about his MoU on Gelegele Seaport, he should tell us about the modern park he said he is going to build.

“We are tired of him deceiving us, telling us things that don’t exist. I have been saying this in the past, why did you go and appeal the case, why did you not take it serious then? There are a lot of cases I have instituted against you that you have not really spoken about, that you have not really done anything about.

“So, I think the world is watching, and we the good people of Edo State are also watching with keenness. And I also want all those people who think I am against Obaseki, no, I am not against him. I am actually doing him a favour. I am bringing out these issues in order for us all to live peacefully in Edo State, so it’s bound to be very ineresting and we are watching with keen interest.

“Those who love our Governor should try and tell him truth, instead of trying to run me down. We must hold politicians accountable at all times”.
