Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Sam Olumekun had said out of the 1.7 million persons registered in the last registration exercises conducted in Edo State, a total number of four hundred and ninty thousand are yet to collect their Permanent Voters Card.
Mr. Sam Olumekun made the clarification in a press briefing with newsmen in Benin City.
Mr. Olumekun said the Independent National Electoral Commission in order to improving on the electoral processes and preventing the disenfranchisement of electorate in the state, the body has set out Wednesday June 22 to Sunday 26 to carry out a continuous registration exercises on those attaining the ages of eighteen, those who could not registered during the last registration exercise, those who registered but could not find their names on the existing voters registers, those whose names appeared on the registers but without their photographs and those without any forms of disability but whose finger prints were not captured during the last election and to give to those who have registered but have not collected theirs.
He said twenty political parties are active in Edo State while only nine have indicated interest to contest in the state’s governorship election come September 10.
The INEC boss said the body will supervise all the parties primaries and ensure that equal opportunity is given to all to avoid unnecessary tensions and anxiety which could lead to the breakdown of law and order.
