Imo PDP leaders back to trenches as court stops state congress

The desire of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,Imo State electing new State Working Committee may have to wait following a Court order stopping the State Congress by an Owerri High Court presided over by Justice Orjiako.

The learned Judge had in a matter brought by the eight PDP members led by the duo of Vitus Nwajioha and Ingram Odimegwu against the PDP and Secretary of the State Congress Electoral Committee, Mr Samuel Gwamman directed all Parties to stay action forthwith pending the determination of the motion exparte brought before the court.

Also, the Presiding judge ordered among other things that the Parties in the matter desist from engaging in acts that‘will have the effect of rendering nugatory any decision in this matter.’

Moreso, the Court directs that the Parties should respect Court proceedings and adjourned till May 19,2016 for arguments on the motion on notice.

The PDP has already being served the order of the Court and put on notice through her Secretary even as the Party Leaders resolved earlier to move the congress to Wednesday.

You may recall that a group within the PDP and known as Coaliation of True PDP Democrats had Monday barricaded the State PDP Secretariat along Okigwe road, Owerri, Imo State calling for the cancellation of the Ward and Local Government Area Congress.

The Protesters had insisted on cancellation of results from eight LGAs in Orlu zone as according to them, the Senator representing Imo West, Senator Hope Uzodinma had manipulated the system as Congress only took place in four LGAs.

Some of the inscriptions on the Placcards carried by the protesters had, “Senator Hope Uzodinma wrote the results, Modu Sheriff is an APC agent,” “No ward and local Congress held in Orlu zone,” “ No to writing of results,” “Electoral panel should publish Orlu results.”

This was just as they called on the Chairman of the Congress  Panel and Deputy Governor of Abia State,   Ude Okochukwu to allow peace reign by going on to complete the congress in Orlu.

Dr. Alex Obi while addressing the Press alleged that many prospective candidates for elective positions were short-changed as only one form was distributed, in effect making it possible for only one contestant and shutting others out after their rigorous campaigns to woo Party members.

Continuing he said, “ given this brazen breach of Party guidelines, we call for the immediate cancellation of the purported Ward and Local Governments Congresses so as to allow Party members in the State and especially in Orlu zone where congresses only held in four out of the twelve local government areas that make up the senatorial zone to elect their leaders at those levels”.

In the same vein, the immediate past Representative of Ohaji/ Egbema/ Oguta/ Oru West in the House of Representatives, Hon. Gerald Irona alleged that during the last congress that Senator Hope Uzodinma had forcefully snatched the electoral materials meant for eight local governments and had insisted that all electoral materials meant for the zone must be distributed through him.

He said: “we had an audience with the state congress panel headed by the Deputy Governor of Abia state where we reported to him that no Congresses were held in eight local governments out of the twelve that make up the Orlu Zone. The electoral panel said that they only acknowledged that congresses were only held in only Four of the councils in Orlu”.

Adding, but we were surprised that results were written for the rest eight councils where congresses never held”.

Hon. Irona said that they will not participate in the State Congresses because of the fraudulent conduct of the Congress and that the Deputy Governor of Abia state should redeem his integrity by completing the congress in the Orlu.

“ It is very unfortunate that the PDP will continue with this level of Impunity that was responsible for its failure in the 2015 general elections” said Irona.
