Civil Society Organizations in Edo, Delta, Ekiti and Ondo state have disclosed plans to engage the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) in a mega protest next week.
The protest, billed to hold on Thursday 12th May, 2016 will take place in Benin City, where BEDC has its headquarters.
In a press release signed by Comrade Osazee Edigin, Public Relations Officer for Edo Civil Society Organisations, and made available to JUNGLE JOURNALIST, the organisers of the protest said that it became necessary to engage the company, due to its “disobedience of court order and other exploitative measures vis-a-vis estimated billing, non provision of meters even after payment, increased tariff etc”.
According to the statement, there is intensive community mobilization currently on going on in the four states covered by BEDC to effectively engage the company.
It further revealed that the protesters will take off from the Museum Grounds, King Square, Benin City at 7am that day.
The statement further enjoined all Nigerians in the four states to support the protests either by joining, or contributing financially or through both means, “This is a fight for the people not civil society alone, we are calling all CDA chairmen, youth chairmen, Enogie, Odionwere, Ohen and all community leaders to mobilize their people to this protest that will send Funke Osibudu packing. Power does not belong to BEDC, it belongs to God, and the voice of the people is the voice of God”, it stated.
