The Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly and his deputy were this morning impeached by a two third majority of the house.
Build-up to the impeachment created a pandemonium in the Chamber, as series of gun shots were heard from the Assembly grounds, while journalists and other stakeholders scampered for safety.
Details of what led to the impeachment are still very sketch but it may not be unconnected with the recent face-off that occurred between the legislature and the executive over the tenure of the local government council, which the legislators said the governor erred, in ordering the local government council chairmen to hand over to their heads of service.
The new speaker of the house is now Hon. Elizabeth Ativie from Uhumwonde local government area while the deputy speaker is Dr. Justin Okunrobo from Igueben Local Government Area.
Ativie is the only female member of the Assembly, and one of the most experienced lawmakers.
