Party faithful in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State have described the Saturday Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ward congresses in Idemili North L.G.A. as the most peaceful and well coordinated activity the party has ever conducted in the local government.
Stakeholders and party members who spoke to News Reporters Int’l lauded the leadership style of the former aviation minister, Chief Osita Chidoka the ‘Ike of Obosi kingdom’ who they said was able to tackle all the challenges that were capable of hindering the successes of the congress.
The former minister had on Friday evening called all Idemili North PDP stakeholders to a meeting in his compound, where he appealed to all aggrieved members who have formed factions and camps in the party to jettison such moves and come together to speak with one voice to move the party forward.
He reminded the party faithful the need to come together as a party especially now. Chidoka said the era of imposition of candidates is over, the party will henceforth allow its members to directly participate in the selection of its candidates. The former minister also said the exercise was very important to the party as it was intended to strengthen the party at the grassroot level.
At the various wards visited by our correspondent, there was an impressive turnout of party loyalists who were anxious to contribute their quota in ensuring the smooth outcome of the exercise.
News Reporters Int’l gathered that all the wards in Idemili North conducted the congresses in a peaceful manner through consensus.
Some Ward Chairmen and stakeholders in the party who spoke to News Reporters Int’l said the leadership style of Chief Osita Chidoka in Ndemili North is one that other PDP leaders should emulate and replicate in their local governments to ensure unity and victory for the party in future elections in the state.
A PDP Chieftain in the local government, Mr Ndu Ikokwu said “as far as I am concerned, the congress in Ndemili North went as smooth as never before. We applied option A4, and people came out as early as 8am, though there were initial delays as materials came around 10am before the election kicked off. There were INEC officials on ground who took note of all that happened in the congress, the DPO in charge of the area also sent his officers to ensure that the congress went on smoothly without any form of hindrance.”
Mrs Philomena Iwezelu, a party member from Obosi in her confirmation said the congress went peaceful and leaders were elected in a consensus manner. “The elections were smooth and peaceful, no issue of factions or camps anymore, we all came together and agreed”
Another party member from Oraukwu who emerged as the Oraukwu Ward Chairman, Chukwunonso Ezepue said “since I joined politics in Anambra State, I have never seen any election as peaceful as this. It was truly free and fair. So I want to use this opportunity to appreciate and commend all stakeholders in the PDP in Idemili North who made this peaceful congress possible, especially the former aviation minister, Chief Osita Chidoka for his efforts to bring all factions in Idemili North under one umbrella, the Ejike Oguebego and the Prince Ken Emeakayi factions in Idemili North came together as one to ensure a peaceful congress, it has never happened before.”
“I want to also commend Hon. Obinna Chidoka for his efforts to bring unity in Idemili North and South, I also want to appreciate Chief Barrister Charles Odunukwe for doing his best to keep PDP in Oraukwu as one”.
“I advice other local governments in the state to emulate what has happened in Idemili North to make PDP in the state come together as one and speak with one voice to ensure victory in the next election. He concluded.
The Ward Chairman in Ideani, Mr. Obed Ebogu confirmed that the congress was peaceful in Ideani, but added that PDP has always been one in his ward. He however condemned the factions in other wards and local governments saying that the issue of faction has always been responsible for the elections and positions lost by the party in the past. He therefore called on all true PDP members to come together under one umbrella to work as a team.
Engr. Ambrose Nwokedi another PDP stakeholder in Ndemili said he is happy with the outcome. “It took the intervention of the former aviation minister, Osita Chidoka, who called everybody together, all the PDP stakeholders in Ndemili, he called them for a meeting where he took time to explain why it is important for all PDP members to work together and jettison the idea of factions so as to move the party forward. It was in that meeting that we all agreed to jettison these factions, and the result is what you saw on Saturday – a peaceful congress in Idemili.”
“I advice all PDP leaders in other local governments to emulate the leadership style of Osita Chidoka so as to move our party forward, because Anambra is a PDP state, but this faction thing has been our problem over the years”. Nwokedi said.
