FALLOUT OF US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS: Americans reject Obama as over 30 states file for secession


About 200,000 people in at least 34 states have signed petitions to the White House to allow their states to secede from the United States since last Tuesday’s election. At least one of those petitions has enough signatures that the White House promises to respond.
The requests were filed on the “We the People” website, which the Obama Administration set up to give Americans a way to engage with government.
All of the petitions have similar titles, such as “Allow for the peaceful withdrawal of Ohio from the United States of America such that it becomes its own free nation.” Another one from Alaska asks to allow voters in that state to decide whether to secede.
While the petitions do not specifically state President Barack Obama’s re-election as the reason for wanting to secede, they have all come following Tuesday’s election.A number of them cite a similar passage from the Declaration of Independence.

A petition from Texas — a state where talk of secession has been brought up in the past — has over 67,000 signatures. According to the “We the People” website, any petition with over 25,000 signatures within 30 days from the time it is launched will be reviewed and receive a response from a White House staffer.
Some states have more than one petition on the site.
A number of the petitions are from states that Obama won, including Oregon. The Oregon petition calls for the state to leave the union peacefully, but remain an ally to the United States. It claims the federal government is abusing its power to trump states’ rights.

“The Federal Government has imposed policies on Oregon that are not in Oregon’s best interests (sic), and we as citizens would respectively and peacably seperate (sic) ourselves from a tyranical (sic) Government who cares nothing about creating a sustainable future for our children,” reads the petition.
A petition with over 36,000 signatures calls on the White House torecount the election.

“It has become blatantly obvious the voter fraud that was committed during the 2012 Presidential elections. In one county alone in Ohio, which was a battleground state, President Obama received 106,258 votes…but there were only 98,213 eligible voters. It’s not humanly possible to get 108% of the vote!” reads the petition. “If ID laws had been enforced (which the administration is completely against because that meant they would lose) then this wouldn’t be an issue.”

Two more petitions have been launched in response, calling on the United States to deport or strip the citizenship of anyone petitioning to secede from the union.

  1. Oga, your headline is misleading. It connotes that the calls for secession is at the instance of some US state governments while the story has it that the whole thing is a web driven iniative from some private individuals. You have not even established a connection between the calls for secession and the state governments. Haba oga!
